After a wet and windy weekend tonight’s conditions were taken directly from the box marked “Stellar” with a warm clear sky and a slight breeze from the preferred direction. With the year starting to take some shape and people returning to routines the 32 cyclists present, represented the best turnout for the season. The spectator numbers were also boosted making for what appeared to be a crowd on the embankment set for another nights entertaining competitive racing. Four cyclists plus supporters made the trip from Wanganui again this week, among their number was 74 year old Victor Possee complete with carbon fibre bike and rear disc wheel.

A mild warm night with a slight South east breeze reminding all present that Feilding has a stellar history as a rural services town. A smaller than usual group of only 15 riders made it to the track tonight but the group provided a good cross section of cyclists with younger 14 year olds to older masters 5 riders proving that cycling is a sport for all ages.

Windy but warm conditions with threatening heavy rain cloud on a day that cyclone type wind and rain had been forecast. Despite the meteorologists grim predictions 29 hardy soles turned out to compete tonight making it the largest turn out of the season. The field also included three visitors from Wanganui. The wide cross section of ages again proved the universal appeal of the sport.

We enjoyed a warm night after a stella hot day on the 4th of January and a keen 16 cyclists began the journey to work off the Christmas excesses. The night was made up of 6 lap warm up races and ended with a long handicapped race with individual record attempts by all riders. The feature was the final 15 lap handicap race which started with 11 riders spread out around the track on their respective handicaps with the track surface hot and no wind. On the start line we had the two scratch markers, old bull Steve Stannard and young bull Jaycob Humphreys. The old bull, displaying a cool and calm exterior was preparing to use all of his cunning and guile to overcome the challenge of the impatient and eager young bull. They had a substantial challenge ahead of them with a solid group of 6 working well together with a head start of half a lap. The old bull started early with comments that he was pretty tired after a successful 2000m individual pursuit record attempt when he broke the masters 2 record by over 10 seconds, this allowed him to reduce the number of turns at the front of the chase and helped drag the energy from the young bull. The race still had 5 laps to go when they caught the lead bunch. The young bull charged to the front of the lead group, the group, apart from the old bull rotated well. The old bull reached into his bag of tricks and told Megan Blatchford that it looked as if she had punctured, she hadn’t, but it was enough for her to take measures to check and affected her momentum. The last lap arrived and the young bull had his impatience on full display as he had already set off for the flag and stretching all chasers, meanwhile old bull was contemplating his next move, he shuffled his way up the line as they had started to string out then at the second last turn he made his move, as he came up to the shoulder of young bull and with less than a hundred metres to go he hit the front and young bull was spent, and the old fable was proven to be true again.
The night was also notable for 2 broken records and a number of new marks set in the various catagories
These are the results:
Rider of the night as selected by Darren Humphreys was Steve Stannard in recognition of his breaking the old masters 2 2000m record by over 10 seconds and doing it without the support of lap splits, Aerobars or pace notes and also the master class he went on to provide it the 15 lap handicap race.

The light rain cleared long enough for the mild conditions to dry the track and we were left with a heavily overcast sky and a light Southerly breeze. The track was looking her best with Albert James of the Manawatu District council arranging for the lines to be repainted and club supporters Ian Gray, Greg Bryan and Darren Humphreys investing 8 man hours on Sunday cutting back the grass edges to expose the full track for the safety of the riders. The feature of the night was to be the Club Championships for the 500 metre standing start time trial, the cool track and moist air were not ideal but the absence of a strong wind was welcomed. The stellar performance of the night was the unofficial equalling of a New Zealand record to Megan Blatchford in the Womans Masters 3 category. Megans time of 40.32 seconds was 2 seconds faster than the old track record. It is heartening to think that a humble outdoor, asphalt provincial track like Feilding when mixed with a world class athlete like Megan can produce an international quality result.

Considering the less than stellar weather conditions with a fragrant easterly wind and a cool overcast sky the 23 riders entertained the chilled crowd with some close racing and some even closer finishes. The first race up was to set the scene with 12 green and enthusiastic riders staying in a tight bunch until the last 150 meters of their 6 lap warm up race with all riders making a charge from all parts of the track for the finish line. The eventual winner, Jordan Castle started the final 150 meters at the rear of the bunch with the only daylight available on the outside of the bunch and close to the fence, he rose from the seat and assumed the sprinters position and proceeded to take the longest way home around the entire field to pip Kelsi Eccles on the line with a blanket able to cover all starters. The rest of the programme had equally entertaining miss n’ out and handicap races. The night also had 5 riders attempt track records with two new records set over the flying 200m distance. Megan Blatchford smashed the senior woman’s mark by 1.58 seconds with a time of 13.86 seconds and Brent Zimmerman equally dominant in knocking 1.36 seconds from the masters 2 time.
The A and B grade miss n’ out race began with a field of 11 riders and on the completion of each lap the rider caught at the rear of the field is eliminated from the race until the field is reduced to four riders then it becomes a one lap race to the line. This race captivates the crowd as they can see riders making surges for the line when the riders can’t, as for safety reasons they must only look ahead and not behind, this results in riders thinking they are safe when only the chasing rider and the crowd can see how vulnerable they are to elimination. This goes on for each lap and only to be stopped by an all out four rider one lap dash for the line.
It is pleasing to see the riders improve in ability and fitness over this early stage of the season thanks in no small way to being able to compete every Tuesday night. The night was also marked by the recognition and farewell of Lachie Ferguson, acknowledging his rider of the night award for last week and wishing him well for his future in Rockhampton Australia. Lachie received the latest Kennet brothers cycling book ‘Louise Sutherland- Spinning the Globe”.
These are the results:
Rider of the night as selected by Denise Brown was Jordan Castle because of his gutsy efforts in all of his racing on the night including missing the track record in the 200m by only .09 seconds.
