A mild night with a heavily overcast sky and a light North Westerly wind greeted the 23 riders that made the trip to the Johnston Park Velodrome on Tuesday night. Most of the riders had competed at the West Coast North Island track championships held at the weekend with nine Bike Manawatu riders gaining selection to the 16 person West Coast North Island team to contest the Rabodirect Age Group Track Cycling National Championships to be held in Invercargill at the end of February.
A large group of 31 riders came out to enjoy a beautiful summers evening with a clear blue sky and a light westerly breeze that eased as the night progressed. Three riders made the trip over from Wanganui. The theme of the nights racing was the Omnium which is a multi discipline event much like a Triathlon or Decathlon but this Omnium was only over three disciplines. The disciplines raced were a short scratch race followed by a one lap standing time trial and finished with a short handicap race. The races were raced in respective age grades and points were awarded one for first, two for second and so on, this makes the Omnium winner the rider that has accumulated the least points. The nights racing concluded with the traditional long handicap race to entertain the audience and ensure all riders had a meaningful and realistic opportunity to challenge for the victory.
With the championship part of the season about to begin the decision was made to resume the season a little early on the Thursday night rather than wait for the usual Tuesday night. While the 16 riders that rode was well down on the seasons average so far it was equal to the comparative years opening meeting last year. It was a mild night with a heavily overcast sky and a westerly wind that came in and out as the night went on, not strong enough to dominate the night but enough to be challenging to the riders not in the bunch.
The Tuesday night was called off due to rain and the weather forecast was promising the same for Thursday so the decision was made to race on the Sunday. The sky was overcast and a light but cool South Easterly wind made shorts and short sleeve shirts give way to jackets or goose bumps. The 1pm start time allowed for an extended programme which began with short points races followed by three up 500 metre scratch races, then 3 up 200 metre sprints to conclude in longer handicap races, all races raced in grades.
Establishing the direction of the gusty wind was not difficult to assess due to the smell greeting all visitors, as the Easterly wind flows over the Freezing Works oxidation pond on its way to the Feilding velodrome. We had 35 riders on Tuesday night which while affected by school camps and exams is still up on last year.
The programme was set around an Omnium made up of a warm up scratch race followed by 1 lap time trials and ended with a long handicap race. An Omnium is a multi discipline event with points awarded based on where the athlete came in each event with 1 point to the winner and 2 to the second place getter, the winner of the Omnium has the least number of points.
