The good conditions ensured fast times and a number of track records in the fourth round of the 1 lap standing start time trials. The meeting also included an Omnium over the first three events of the programe.
The next track cycling meeting is Tuesday 10th of December with racing to begin 6.10pm. This meeting was to be the first round of the Club Championships but as a number of riders will be involved in the Novice Tour and the Junior Development camp the first round of the Club Championship has been moved to the last meeting of the calendar year on 17th of December.

Showers earlier in the day prevented a fast track but the light breeze allowed reasonable conditions for the riders today. The 40th running of the Novice Tour on the weekend meant a number of regular riders stayed home with their feet up recovering.
The next track cycling meeting is Tuesday 17th of December with racing to begin 6.10pm. This meeting is the first round of the Club Championship and the last meeting of the calender year.

SIMON VAN VELTHOOVEN
World Cup Season
A major part of our long road to the 2016 Rio Olympics began on the 7th of October with a training camp ahead of the Manchester World Cup held early November. These training camps are very serious as specific riders are chosen for each event from out of these camps and therefore everyone is expected to be fighting fit and firing on all cylinders.
Russians or ‘Rush-ins’ which is the correct term, are our favourite team effort to carry out as it combines a mixture of all the training we do in one effort. Between 4-6 of us loop the top of the track gathering speed then rip it up down the front straight nearing 80kph when riders 1-3-5 swing up mid bend leaving riders 2-4-6 to chase each other and race the next 200 odd metres to the finish line rarely getting under 75kph. Of course there is some argy bargy in these efforts so you need to keep a clear head because any sudden movements when somebody touches you can easily mean it’s all over.
During one of our training days the classy old men (that head down to invercargill for the week of the ‘Burt Munroe Challenge’) come into the Velo and check out what we do with the motorbike. Now our chase bike doesn’t excite them very much but when they see it ripping around at 90kph with us glued to the back wheel it does raise their eyebrows somewhat. It’s pretty cool having these people there because they actually come into pits and see the bikes for themselves, see how they are made, how they work and then see us in action at warp speed.

My involvement with Bike Manawatu started when our sons took up competitive cycling during their secondary school years. I have spent many hours anxiously waiting on roadsides in New Zealand and overseas, clutching bottles and spare clothes, chasing around the course to a good vantage point to watch the peloton flash past in a blur. When my husband, Peter, was Club Chairman we took responsibility for organisation of the local events and I have done my time with a stop watch and road signage!
By 2004 I was no longer needed for support person duty and Peter bought me a bike; but it took three years before I started riding it. He then had to suffer through very slow rides, pushing me up hills, helping me “click in and out” while I built up confidence. Now I am an enthusiastic social rider, heading out with the Velo Girls each Tuesday and Bike Manawatu on Sundays.
I do understand the differing needs of the competitive and social rider and our club caters well to both groups. We have an excellent group of talented competitive cyclists in the club and we have a very supportive group of experienced social riders.

Don’t forget the end of year prizegiving will be held on Thursday 19th December at marist Clubrooms starting at 7 pm.
The bar will be open and everyone is asked to bring a plate for supper.
Will there be a special guest this year? You will just have to wait and see. Entertaining – bound to be.
