This year it was 18 year old rugby player, Mikka, who came out of nowhere to blitz everyone in the Marist Sports Club Spin Bike annual challenge, held on Saturday Night in the Marist clubrooms. He managed to secure the quickest speed on the night of 96.9km/hr in a burst of speed more akin to the likes of Mark Cavendish in a Tour de France stage sprint. Although there was some debate about the accuracy of the speedo from the closet UCI commissaires amongst the Bike Manawatu supporters, it was the same setting for all riders claimed the event organiser, Matthijs van Wagtendonk. In one feat of physical toughness another rugby contestant, Leyton, chose to remove his shoes and the only thing covering his feet were his socks. Now those who ride will know just how uncomfortable that can be, but surprisingly he managed to reach just over 83km/hr, which was one of the better times on the night. (more…)

After 2 stages of the Canberra tour there are some exciting results coming through.
In the under 17 girls our very own Kate Stewart on general classification is in 15th place +4:17 on the leader.
Stage one was an individual time trial and Kate was placed 21st in that 1 min 39 behind the winner of the stage. In the second stage Kate was 14th over the line.
In the under 17 boys we have Mark Findlay representing us. He was placed 17th in the time trial and went on to win the second stage. Looking at the GC he stands at 7th after 2 stages with +:54 . In the stage 2 race there were 20 other boys that all finished with the same time as Mark so it will be a real tussle in the 3rd stage.

Mitchell Kinghorn is an enthusiastic cyclist who is in his final year at Palmerston North Intermediate Normal School. He took up cycling as a sport 18 months ago as a year 7 at PN Intermediate Normal. He is soon to have his 13th birthday.
About a month ago Mitchell was out on a training ride with a friend. When the two of them got closer to home, just on dusk and lights were required to get home, Mitchell decided to ride home with his friend before heading home himself. They headed up Tremaine Ave at 5.00pm on this Tuesday evening, traffic heavy with the business day ending.
Unfortunately he had an accident before he made it home. When he hit the ground he sustained a nasty gash to his leg. He immediately went into shock. A passing motorist stopped to assist him. Mitchell was unable to tell the person who he was or what his phone number was. When he started at PN Intermediate he was given an ICE card which he had in his back pocket. He was able to pull this out and hand to the person assisting him. They were then able to call Mitchell’s parents and inform them of the situation. Mitchell’s Dad rushed to the scene and was with Mitchell as he was taken off to hospital.
So if you are talking to Mitchell or his parents they will reinforce the importance of carrying an ICE number with you whenever you are out as you just don’t know what might happen.
With this incident in mind Bike Manawatu is investigating producing a small disc that will be able to record your ICE number on and that will be attached to your bike. The Police and Emergency services will be informed of this initiative and all Bike Manawatu members will be asked to put the disc on their bikes as soon as they are received. They will be mailed out with the August newsletter which should go out in the mail in the last week in July. They will have an adhesive back on them with a hole in the centre and will be placed over the disc on the front stem. Having them all displayed in the same place will aid emergency services as they will not need to search for the location on your bike.

At a recent Board meeting it was suggested that we look within our membership to see if there is anyone interested in undertaking STMS training and that the person completing the training would then be available to perform that function at our club events. For those that do not know what an STMS is, it stands for Safety and Traffic Management supervisor.
There is a process that needs to be completed before full registration is attained. There is a basic level traffic controller course which takes 1 day. The next course is due to be run on 26 July, then 30 August or 4 October. The courses are run in Palmerston North.
After holding a traffic controller’s certificate for 1 month the person can then undertake STMS level 1 training. This is a 2 day course and the dates set for these this year are 5& 6 September, 11 & 12 October or 10 & 11 November.
If you already hold STMS but just need to attend a refresher course these are being held on 27 July, 31 August, 5 October and 9 November. This is a 5 hour workshop.
If you want more information or would like to attend these courses and became a qualified STMS, then please contact the secretary either by email secretary@bikemanawatu.co.nz or phone 357- 5349 extn 747 or leave a message.
