PNBHS riders dominated the placings in the Manawatu Schools Cycling competition held on 30 June. Over 80 experienced and novice riders from the Manawatu and surrounding region’s schools participated in a 2.3km hill climb up Saddle Road, then took on a 10km individual time trial down Pohangina Valley Road. A challenging points race around the streets of Ashhurst concluded the event. The conditions were cold with a significant wind chill factor.
The U15 boys’ had a small field of three riders from Waiopehu, Freyberg and Fergus Bryan from PNBHS. Thomas Garbett from Waiopehu dominated all events whilst PNBHS rider Fergus Bryan finished second in all three races to take out the silver medal at the end of the day.

With an 8 strong team contesting the U15, U17 and U19 titles, Manawatu school champs was a perfect event two weeks out from North Island Secondary school champs for the PNGHS cycling team.
All 3 of our U15 contenders had come from the PNINS cycling team with some quality experience under their belts. Libby Arbuckle was the clear winner of the U15 Girls category with her power and national titles behind her; while little Gorgi Van Lienen had a great day of racing, and also Megan Gardiner who is definitely developing into a strong rider with a 3rd place in the Time trial. It was great to hear these girls talking about the racing on Monday and how much fun they had!
In the U17 Girls category Jaimee Leader was a serious contender as she builds up for Junior Triathlon World championships in London

The handicap series and interclub events are again on the calendar.
The first grading race is this Saturday.
Once you r grade is set you will be required to stay in that grade for the handicap series. BM will be running races using the

Please register online for these events as it makes it easier at registration.
We need helpers for all events so please select which event you wish to help with so you can be added to the list on that day.
Otherwise you will be added to a date and then if you are not able to help on that day it will be your responsibility to find a replacement.
As a marshall you will be given a pack containing instructions and map of where you are required.
If you are helping on the start or finish full instructions will be given also.

Some of you may have heard of or ridden the Source to Sea Cycle Challenge from St Arnaud to Westport. The main event is a 100-mile ride with a descending nature, from the alpine regions of Nelson Lakes National Park, to the Tasman Sea at Carters Beach
We believe the event is exceptional unique in that 100-miles is a significant milestone for all cyclists, and the Buller River just happens to 100-miles long, with the added bonus of having a sealed road along the river banks. It is a special and memorable cycling experience and we wish to share it with as many people as possible.

Bike NZ are in the planning stage for the next set of Commissaires courses and they have said that running one in Palmerston North would be a good fit.
For these courses, they now run these as a one day Club/Centre Commissaires course (a 7 to 8 hour course), which is a pre-requisite for those that may wish to later go on to do a National Commissaires course. The Club/Centre qualification allows people to officiate at the club and regional level, and also to assist at major events under the supervision of a National Commissaire.
Bike NZ require the Centre to provide a venue with a classroom type set up (whiteboard and projector if possible). There would be a fee per participant, which would go towards the cost of travel and accommodation for the course tutors (who will be volunteer National Commissaires) and provision of materials.
There is a short exam at the end of the course. Bike NZ would then assign a local, senior commissiare to provide support to the new Commissaires.
