Wednesday Time Trials – 11 Feb

Another fine night on Wednesday for the time trial.  The winds were light, however a tail wind on the outward leg threw a spanner in the works for many, making it hard for regular riders to better their previous times.  Barry Gilliland was one of the exceptions, maintaining his perfect score of 2 points/week!  Alex West had the fastest time of the week, with 15:34, but the long standing record is proving elusive for the “young guns”.  Thanks again to all those regular helpers who are becoming rather expert at setting up and taking the times, and even the entries!”

Wed Night TT results for 28th Jan.

26 riders turned up for the second of this year’s ITTs on Wed night.  The forecast of a warm sunny day promised some fast times, but the appearance a solid easterly put paid to any records, at least as far as Robert Stannard was concerned.  Into a block headwind on homeward leg down Kairanga Rd he was 6 seconds off the current record of 15:23 min.  Other impressive times went to Ross Rainham 17:49 and the evergreen (and seemingly getting faster) Neville Weir (16:58).  Improver of the night went to Peita Ransom, who went nearly 2 min faster this week.

Hub Tour 2015 Race Report

The annual Hub Tour at Hawkes Bay was held over the last weekend just west of Napier.  Whilst the elite National Road Championships are always on the same weekend, the Hub Tour draws just about anyone else who races, making it one of the hardest tours on the Calendar.  Particularly so for the B and C grades, where the always good prize pool is keenly contested.

As usual, Bike Manawatu involvement was high, with nine riders in the Elite mens A grade, three in mens B grade, one in mens C grade, two in girls U17, and two in U17 boys, making BM the best represented clubs behind the hosting Ramblers club.

The race started on Friday evening with a 6.9 km prologue.  Notable rides in this stage came from Campbell Stewart, Alex West, and Robert Stannard in this opening stage, all three finishing top 5, with Robert grabbing the yellow jersey by 1/100th of a second from Aaron Strong (Auckland).  Carlos Lopez-Lozano also showed his class with a second placing in B grade, whilst Libby Arbuckle and Emily Shearman ran one/two in their race, separated only by one second.

Results from Time Trial at Pyke Rd

The first event of the series was a rime trial with both a short and long course on offer. This was an all comers event and it was nice to see a few new faces as well as some old faces returning to the racing scene.

Special thanks to all of the helpers. Graeme Ransom, Rob Gardner and John Arbuckle out on the course and Stu McKenzie and Chris Croton on the start and finish line.

Next weeks race details will be sent out on Thursday to all that are receiving the race updates as well as all those that took part in this event.

Final Club Road Race for Autumn Season

On what would have to be considered perfect conditions for racing a small determined field of riders gathered at Colyton Hall. For many this would be there first time on this course. It has in the past been used by the Schools cycling group and as an add on to the Valley Rd circuit.

With a poor turn out of volunteers I read the race briefing before handing over the start of the race to Catriona Pirie, who was eager to head to the local shop to grab a bite to eat.

I then drove out with the cone to the turn point past Creamery Rd and through the windy rolling countryside north of Colyton. At the turn point I quickly placed the cone and passed the time talking about the weather and farming conditions with a new farmer to the district, William who was keen to know about cycling in the district. Hopefully I convinced him to come out some time soon and join in for a race.
