If this season was to be remembered for anything it would have to be the fantastic conditions and tonight was no exception with little cloud cover a very light westerly and a mild temperature. The stellar performance of the night was from an age group rider that was thrust into an all in final handicap race at the limit mark and held on to take the race by less than a 100 metres. The tailing off of the season was more apparent with only 13 riders making it to the meeting. Next week will be the final race night of the season and will have prize money available for selected races.

The weather forecast said it should be raining but we were given a warm night, threatening sky and a zephyr of a breeze at the track tonight. The competitor carrying the stellar label tonight was to be “The Rain” as it was involved in one of the tightest finishes of the night.
The programme began with club scratch race championships then riders were given a choice between a flying lap or a 1 lap time trial and then finished with a longer handicap race. The club championship races were raced in their respective grades with points awarded to the first five place getters.

The conditions were close to perfect being cool and almost calm with a clear sky. A low turnout of only 14 riders was reflective of the nationals hangover with the stellar performing, multiple medal winning juniors enjoying a well earned rest at home. A number of riders have switched to road mode and so we will have to wait until November to see them on the track again.
The programme tonight was made up of graded 5 lap warm up races and to make the most of the favourable conditions one lap time trials then team sprints and finished off with long handicap races.

The riders of the night on 21st February 2011 were Bryce Hirschberg and Levi Bryan. A Grader Bryce Hirschberg was nearly invincible (apart from coming second in the cone race by 0.01 seconds) and Levi Bryan had a fantastic tactical finish to win the C Grade 3 lap elimination race.

While the sun was out in a clear sky the moderate to strong southeast wind made conditions challenging for the riders and cold in the shaded areas for spectators. The stellar landing tonight of Simon van Velthooven the multiple medal winner at January’s track cycling World cup in Beijing added the star power to what was a small turnout of 17 riders. Simon offered the opportunity to those present to purchase some of his extensive New Zealand team kit, judging by the popularity of the offer we will be having a number of riders getting a little extra attention from motorists and spectators as they pedal their bikes on and off the track.
