June 1, 2 and 3 2013
The traditionally appalling weather failed to materialize for the Tour of Taranaki this year – although it made a valiant attempt on Saturday, hiding the mountain in clouds and rainbows and washing our bikes clean of cow dung. However, clear skies on Sunday and Monday meant that it was Bike Manawatu riders who made hay while the sun shone in the Naki over the June long weekend.
In a strong A Grade field Luke Mudgway should have succeeded in his mission to impress the U19 Bike NZ selectors with a strong tour, culminating in a decisive four-man break on the final stage. Luke finished third on GC behind hard man, Gordon MacCauley, and Morgan Smith, ahead of many more fancied (and experienced) riders. George Roberts started the race, but withdrew due to illness.

The new Bike Manawatu board met for the first time this week .
We welcome Sue McMaster and Marcel Hollenstein and know that they each have much to contribute. Their pedigree on and off the bike is outstanding.
As reported in the Chairmans’ report at the AGM, the club continues to punch above our weight in so many different areas. What must be recognised and applauded loudly were the outstanding achievements of our group of riders, particularly the junior riders who represented Bike Manawatu at the Road Nationals last month in Queenstown. The rest of the country wants to know the secret! How often would you see 5 of the first 6 riders in a national competition from just one club being first across the finish line?
Outstanding work by all involved and congratulations too to the parents, supporters, coaches and others who helped all our riders perform and to make it happen. Long may it last.

To all interested U17 and U19 riders who are Bike Manawatu members and who are keen on improving their general strength through the winter break:
Steve Stannard is organizing resistance training evenings, beginning at Massey University, starting next Thu night.
They will start at 6:30 pm, likely on Mondays and Thursdays (though not absolutely set) and will begin with an introduction to the safety and techniques of weight training. Each session will last about one hour.
Please email Steve if you are interested, but do this after talking with your coach and/or parent first.
Numbers will be limited so first in, first served.
There will be a (large) gold coin ($2) donation each session to cover the instructors time.
