Volunteering

Volunteering is a great part of being involved in any sports club – its vital to the running of the club and its events. It gives you a chance to give something back to your club, and you get to see what goes into keeping each race safe.

It is a requirement for all  Club Members who have identified that they want to race to volunteer for a race as a race manager or to assist with marshalling and race management. With out adequate club members support in volunteering at races we may not be able to deliver races for you to participate in.

You can select a race to volunteer for by emailing the secretary@bikemanawatu.co.nz  with your name, contact details and the date of the race that you would like to volunteer for. It is club policy that if you do not select a race to volunteer at, one will be allocated to you.

Let us know if you are keen to manage a race when you volunteer. As a race manager you will receive plenty of support and we will provide you with an updated race managers sheet detailing the responsibilities of the role and also a  traffic management plan for your course.

The volunteer does not have to be you, it might be one of your supporters that will be cheering from the roadside at a race anyway.

Select your volunteer date and email to the secretary@bikemanawatu.co.nz then hit the road for some training. Looking forward to seeing you all at the races!

Details on each race are on the calendar.

Are you looking for a new, fast paced dynamic sport?

track Sharon HollensteinTrack cycling may be the buzz you are looking for.

In March 2013, master’s women will have four National Track Cycling Championship events to contest on the indoor velodrome in Invercargill.

This year we had no master’s women riders from Bike Manawatu or the West Coast North Island centre (which we represent) competing at the championships.

Let’s change that in 2013!

Whether a current road cyclist or you compete in another sport, there are no barriers to getting started and progress is fast.

Bike Manawatu offers track bike hire, and the local Feilding track has no steep banking and free coaching is available (see below for details).

The benefits of track cycling are:

  • General fitness-An excellent workout where you can avoid traffic and continuous head winds.
  • Mastering a new skill-Rewarding and you will be surprised how easy it is.
  • Improved bike handling-Excellent cross training for road cyclists, triathletes, and mountain bikers to fine tune skills, improve speed and power.
  • A competitive challenge-WCNI centre and national championship events to contest plus the NZ Masters Games in Wanganui in February 2013.

Friday the 13th May be considered unlucky by some

Friday the 13th May be considered unlucky by some people but for two Bike Manawatu members Richard Sheehan and Jaycob Humpreys it was their lucky day.

rescue helicopterEarly Friday morning the call came from Chris Moody pilot of the local Rescue helicopter to arrange a flight for that day. This chance for a flight had been won some weeks earlier at the Manfeild 6 hour event and was keenly anticipated.

We met Chris at the Feildair hanger where the helicopter is kept and after a safety briefing we were in the chopper and underway.

Juniors in Canberra

The first stage for all age groups was a time trial followed by a road race in the afternoon. The next day started with stage 3, another road race and ended with the final stage a criterium in the afternoon.

At the end of stage 4 Campbell Stewart who was racing in the under 15 boys was second on General Classification just 55 seconds down on the leader. He also was 2nd on KOM after stage 3 with 12 points, the same points as tour leader Cameron Scott. A credible effort from Campbell and he should be congratulated for this fabulous result. He will know now what he has to look forward to in years to come.

Kate Stewart who was racing in the under 17 women, was placed 10th on GC 5 mins 40 secs behind the leader at the end of the tour. Her time trial stage 1 time was recorded as 16 mins 12 secs less than a minute down on the tour leader.  Stage 2 Kate finished in 14th place and stage 3 she finished in 8th place in the peloton 1min 37 secs behind the lead bunch of 3 riders.

Jordan Castle was placed 32nd at 13 mins 6 secs behind the leader in the under 17 men. Seventy three riders started in this age group. Jordan was placed 41st after the opening time trial, so made a concerted effort to climb back up the general classification placings.

Mark Findlay was placed 29th after the opening time trial stage which was held on the Friday before all other age groups had their time trials. His time was recorded as 35 mins 36 secs for the stage. No results were shown for Mark for stage 2 however he was placed 7th in stage 3 in the peloton just 12 seconds behind the stage winner. Mark was recorded as finishing in 30th place in stage 4, the criterium however  Mark  did not appear in the official GC results so until we receive the reports from the riders we will not be able to report where he was placed overall for the tour.

Congratulations to all of these riders for representing Bike Manawatu and New Zealand so well.
