Coaching Survey Reminder

All Bike Manawatu members should have received a link earlier in the week to a Coaching Survey.

Even if you have no interest in any coaching support we would really appreciate if you completed the survey so we know this. It will take approximately 3 minutes.

Rider development is an important priority for BikeManawatu and we aim to provide the best coaching support possible to our members.

If you are a member and didn’t receive the survey email or have yet to respond, we value everyone’s feedback, and would especially like some more responses from member’s in the 15-29 year range! Email secretary@bikemanawatu.co.nz for a link to the survey.

And a big thank you to everyone who has responded so far, we are gathering some valuable information.

Start of the Track season

Looking at the weather outside today you wouldn’t think it was spring and think that summer is just around the corner. But it is, so it is time to start thinking about the upcoming track season. After inspiring performances at the 2012 London Olympics by both Jesse and Simon, how could anyone not want to have a go on a track bike. After all they started their illustrious careers of track cycling on the Johnston Park velodrome in Feilding.

So some dates have been set and the enquiries for hiring a bike are flowing in already.

The dates are set out below. More dates will be available on the calendar for track happenings soon.

If you want to “have a go” come along to the Have a Go Day.

If you want to hire a bike you MUST make an appointment. There are limited times available. There are limited bikes available.

To make an appointment send an email to secretary@bikemanawatu.co.nz . Please state in the email the size bike you think you require, your age, and the preferred time and date for your appointment and we will try and put you in that spot.  As you can see there are plenty of spots to choose from but don’t come without first making an appointment.

Awards Dinner huge success

Awards Dinner huge success

IMG_1878The inaugural awards dinner was held on Friday night at Hotel Coachman. The guest speaker for the night was Simon van Velthooven – London Olympic Bronze medallist. The medal sat in it’s case on the bar for all to look at or hold or wear. The master of ceremonies for the night was Ken Young resplendent in his kilt. He started the evening by welcoming everyone including the invited guests.  Before dessert was served we were enthralled by Simon’s address. He not only covered his route to get to where he is now but told of his most cherished moments – the kilo in 60 seconds at Melbourne – a feat that just blows the mind and for some of us is just completely incomprehensible. Keiren racing in Japan is something quite extraordinary and Simons account of racing conditions, bikes, crowds and crowd actions was enlightening and amusing.  He ended his presentation by asking the crowd if there were any questions. One answer to a question from Adam Curry had every one in fits of laughter. Simon ended his presentation by saying that there is the medal and then there is Simon. He regards himself still just as Simon. He is a great role model to all our riders.  He was presented with a Bike Manawatu skin suit and asked to wear it with pride as Bike Manawatu is certainly very proud of him.

After dessert the awards part of the evening started. The first award was presented by Garry Buys and was the Pedal Pushers Good Samaritan Award. This was awarded to Richard Sheehan for his help with the newbies on the Sunday rides and the first XV.

Woolworths Cup Results Saturday 1st September

The first official day of spring certainly turned out to be a beautiful day and a stark contrast to the week before. Or perhaps it is just that the Manawatu has better weather than Pahiatua.

Registrations were taken at Ashhurst Library for what was set to be large numbers racing in the second in the series of three handicap races. D grade set off at the start followed 5 minutes later by C Grade. Large numbers meant that B grade was split into 2 start groups B with 13 riders starting at 9 mins and B+ also with 13 riders starting at 12 minutes. This would mean that the A grade which was also split would really need to do some work if they were going to catch the B graders by the finish line.

The juniors completed a shorter course turning at Raumai and racing back to the finish line at Ashhurst. In what would be regarded as a dead heat Daniel Kendall and Thomas Stannard could not be separated so they will both get 1 point for the handicap series.

Thanks to John Arbuckle for bringing the trailer out (Sorry John I still have your petrol vouchers in my car). Thanks also to our marshals Graeme Ransom and Matt Levin. Matt van Wagtendonk was again on the scene helping out as tail vehicle for the junior riders. Kirsty Kaihau helped out on registration. Special thanks to the helpers on the finish line – Paul and Carol Roberts, Fiona Huston and Paul Kendall.

Unfortunately for 1 rider number 90 he will gain no points for this race. 90 and another rider were sprinting for the line. The other rider crossed half a wheel length in front of 90. Both numbers were called and recorded. On the computer an error message automatically appeared. On further investigation rider 90 had crossed the finish line earlier. If this situation was not highlighted it could have meant that the judges pulled the finish line before the last rider crossed. The number of riders who start a race is recorded and then the number of riders that cross the finish line or report back as a DNF is also recorded so to cross the finish line twice is not a good idea.

Next weeks race and the final in the series along with prizegiving will be held at Ashhurst. Registraion again at Ashhurst library at 1pm.
