Grand Opening Manawatu River Pathway extension between Ashhurst Bridge and Raukawa Road

River walkwayCouncil has recently completed the 3km long first stage of the Manawatu River Pathway extension between Ashhurst Bridge and Raukawa Road.  Please come and celebrate the occasion at the grand opening on Saturday 30 November 2013 at 2pm underneath Ashhurst Bridge.

This is the first of three stages towards extending the pathway generally along the right bank of the Manawatu River from Ashhurst Bridge to Riverside Drive (where the existing 10km long section of the pathway currently ends).  When the next two stages are completed over the next couple of years they will combine to form a continuous 3m wide shared pathway for a distance of over 22km from Ashhurst to Maxwells Line in the west of Palmerston North.

The project continues to have great support from a number of people and organisations.

Grafton Inverell ‘95

By Katherine Stannard (with apologies to Banjo Patterson and Clancy of the Overflow)

I found this when I was cleaning out the cupboard the other day – while it is a race report from another time and another place it could be describing the twists and turns of almost any race. I thought you might enjoy it.

First, a little bit of background; the Grafton Inverell is a single day, graded, 240km race from Grafton, at sea level in northern New South Wales, up over the Gibraltar range (a winding climb of some 18km) to Inverell, some 600m above sea level. The year that Steve and I did the race Phil Anderson (aka Skippy) was invited to be the race starter. We were racing for our Northern Suburbs Club who were sponsored by the Clancy’s supermarket chain. The rest, as they say, is history….

As we marshalled on the start line

in the early morning light

There were twenty Clancy’s riders, maybe more

And as “Skippy” gave the signal

Results Wednesday Time trials week 2

What a difference a day makes / Twenty-four little hours / Brought the sun and the flowers / Where there used to be rain Originally written in Spanish but popularized by Dinah Washington. Oh so true as if anyone was thinking about doing a time trial on Tuesday it would have been cancelled but there was hardly a breath of wind on Wednesday.

A good turn out of 50 riders with again more new people coming out to have their first crack at a time trial for the season or first time ever.

Thanks to Mike Simpson for taking control of the night and even stepping up with the laptop to do the timing/results. Thanks also to the helpers on the night. Rebecca Denholm at registration, Pete Robson at the turn, Michael Groube, Chris and Kirsty on the start and finish.

Already there are 20 people on 4 points so the coming weeks will see more and more people trying to keep their points tallies as high as possible. It is very apparent when a few people try to beat the system by not putting all effort in to producing the best time possible. Time trials are all about trying to better your own time, so by taking it easy one week just so you can improve the next week by going at a regular pace may be the downfall of some people as the weather always plays an important factor.

Txt’n n Bike’n

Reported on the BikeManawatu Facebook page:
A young male cyclist swerved in front of us today on the main road (Napier Rd) into Palmerston North, evasive action by my husband saved the day, to our horror cyclist was texting and continued to do so.  Now he was outfitted in full cycling clothes and was obviously a regular rider so maybe Bike Manawatu needs to try and get the message out how stupid and dangerous this is.

Not sure if it’s illegal, but it’s definitely stupid!
