Reminder about upcoming club champs

It is fast approaching – that time of year when we are holding club champs for all age groups. We will be holding the individual time trial champs at Rongotea on Saturday 3rd March.

There are different course lengths depending on age group. Each rider will be set off at 30 second intervals, but where it differs to Wednesday night time trials is that we have age groups riding one after the other so you cannot just arrive on the scene and go when it is your turn. A start list will be prepared the night before so it is imperative that you preregister.

Last year we had 64 riders registered.

Under 13 girls /boys  Distance 8kms

Under 15 & under 17 girls /boys Distance 16kms

Under 19 women /men Distance 25kms

Senior/under 23 men /women Distance 40kms

Masters women/men Distance 25kms

You can register either by phoning me at at Sport Manawatu  357 5349 and leaving a message if I am not in the office.

Or send an email to me at secretary@bikemanawatu.co.nz

You must be a financial member to be eligible for the cups and medals.

These will be awarded at the AGM and prizegiving that will be held on Thursday 26th April

Also on 31st March is club road champs.

Simon Van Velthooven takes cup

Simon Van Velthooven takes cup

SimonVeltPalmerston North cyclist Simon van Velthooven won the overall World Cup title in the kilo time trial at the UCI World Cup in London Saturday.

He finished third in the time trial but it was enough to win the overall honours after his second place in Cali, Columbia, his win at Beijing and third in London.  He was 16th fastest in the opening lap but the fastest in the field over the middle 500m and came home solidly.

In the final of his preferred Keirin event however, van Velthooven slumped to sixth place with Great Britian’s Chris Hoy winning it.

Steve Stannard wins Wellington-to-Auckland Cycle Challenge

From the Manawatu Standard:

Fresh off a gruelling week in the New Zealand Cycle Classic in Manawatu last month, Massey University’s Steve Stannard won the Wellington-to-Auckland Cycle Challenge, which finished in Pukekohe on Saturday.

After taking the yellow leader’s jersey on the first day, Stannard relinquished it for only one day before he got it back and kept it for the rest of the tour. He finished in the bunch in the final stage, more than a minute ahead of the second-placed rider. To top off his successful week, he won the King of the Mountains category, which had been his original target.

Apparently Steve was  doing it by himself with no help, having to ride from start to finish and then in between to the next start point.  Quite an amazing ride for him!

The Wellington to Auckland Cycle Challenge

The Wellington to Auckland Cycle Challenge

The Wellington to Auckland Cycle ChallengeSaturday 11th February saw my wife and I head to Wellington to get ready for the start of the 7 day event, for which training has taken up much of my spare time over the past two months. The journey to Wellington was uneventful, though I must admit to being somewhat nervous. Once we arrived at our accommodation and met some of the other participants, the nerves settled somewhat. Registration took place at a BMW franchise at Kaiwharawhara, and there with all entrants the excitement was clearly building. This was followed by a meal at Lower Hutt, an early night for an early start next morning. Colin Anderson (Wal), Averil Sheehan and Steve Stannard were the other Palmerston North participants in the event. Hamish MacKay from Radio Sport and TV3 entered again, and the event included All Black legend Ian Kirkpatrick!
