Palmerston North cyclist Simon van Velthooven won the overall World Cup title in the kilo time trial at the UCI World Cup in London Saturday.
He finished third in the time trial but it was enough to win the overall honours after his second place in Cali, Columbia, his win at Beijing and third in London. He was 16th fastest in the opening lap but the fastest in the field over the middle 500m and came home solidly.
In the final of his preferred Keirin event however, van Velthooven slumped to sixth place with Great Britian’s Chris Hoy winning it.
