What an awesome track, great facilities which were certainly stretched with the 2000+ cyclists sharing the 35 or so vehicle bays.
As I was preparing for the start a call came over speaker system for me to line up with the VIPs and about 50 others for the first unofficial lap. This caused a fair amount of confusion as it was some 20 minutes from official start time, and no one enjoys being bustled at the start of any event. Anyhow we were soon on our way off around the track at a more than steady pace, only to then have to stand around on the opposite side of track whilst all countries present had their respective National Anthem played—and it was Very hot!!

14 teams came to the 2 up Time Trial at Hiwinui on Saturday 10th September. 2 teams opted for the one lap options the other 12 did 2 laps of the 18 km “undulating” circuit. Emily Shearman and Carne Groube had no problems at all with the one lap.

Sam Horgan (Pegasus Cycling) was the standout rider over the weekend at the Manawatu Standard Fielding Festival of Cycling. Horgan showed his class when he secured wins in both the criterium race around the streets of Fielding’s CBD on Saturday, then stepped it up a notch on Sunday to also win the 90km Fielding to Apiti Joe Allen Classic graded race in 2.08:07. Horgan, a former student at PNBHS was quick to acknowledge the opportunity of riding again in Manawatu in front of his biggest fans – his parents.

From the 6th to the 11th of July, I, along with around 40 other Junior New Zealand cyclists were involved with the Junior Tour of Canberra in Australia. We flew out of Auckland on a Wednesday afternoon and after a pleasant and excitement filled flight we arrived in Sydney at around 5pm. We soon gathered our bikes and baggage and after a lengthy wait, our truck arrived and we piled all the gear into the back of it, eventually managing to fit everything in. From here we divided ourselves into a few mini vans and set off for a three hour drive to Canberra. By this time it was close to 10pm so the drive was quiet and sleep-filled. We arose sleepily at around midnight as we arrived at the Australian Institute of Sport where we were issued individual key cards and soon were fast asleep in our individual rooms.

The first day we flew to Auckland and after a quick stop we jumped on a flight to Sydney. It was all jokes on the plane, with most of us being excited for the racing ahead. After a long wait for our vans we finally were off to Canberra to stay at the Australian Institute of Sport. We arrived late that night at 12am. The Thursday began with relaxing and getting our bikes ready for the time trial. This was the stage that I wasn’t looking forward to.
