WCNI Track Cycling Champs 2013

148381_524122134288473_1342610572_n-1This past weekend saw Track Cyclists from Palmerston North, Whanganui, Levin, Stratford, Hawkes Bay and Wellington travelling to New Plymouth to compete alongside the New Plymouth Trackies in the WCNI Track Cycling Championships.

With Mount Taranaki and the ocean sitting either side of the Veledrome the Taranaki Cycle Park is easily the most scenic Veledrome in the country,  although with that kind of scenery comes the wind and the cyclists found themselves battling very strong head winds down the back straight as they raced.  That being said there was plenty of very good racing to be seen.  Of notable mention were Kelsi Eccles (Bike Manawatu) and Kyle Davie (Levin) who rode exceptionally well.  These two riders (from a spectators point of view) have made the most noticeable improvement from last season.

Notes from the mountain…

Notes from the mountain…

Elizabeth on State Hwy 4I write this sitting in a large kitchen in the Station Lodge and Guesthouse in Ohakune, just having filled my belly with poached eggs and banana on toast. We’ve just come back from riding up the mountain; a pretty hard climb if you’re not familiar with it, but the view from the top is well worth the effort.

Today is day three of our summer training camp. On the first day (Tue 18th) we rode from Palmerston North to Wanganui via Hunterville. We completed about 140 km that day, and climbed a total of 1200m. Next day we road up State Hwy 4 to Ohakune (105 km) which meant another 1500m of climbing. Needless to say, there were a few tired legs last night.

Bike Manawatu Track Cycling, 4th December 2012, Johnston Park Feilding

A mild calm evening with a heavy sky threatening rain. It did rain just before the scheduled start time but the warm track allowed the track to dry sufficiently to allow the meeting proceed if half an hour late. It did mean the meeting had to be condensed a little but the programme was completed with no further rain falls. The programme was made up of mid sized points races followed by 3 up 500 metre scratch races and finished off with the longer handicap races.
