Race Report: Sutton Cup, Pahiatua, Saturday 31st July

The Sutton Cup has, over the past few years, been the first race of our handicap season. That being the case, it has been a sealed handicap, where everyone starts together, and the handicapper prior to the start makes a call on how much time should be added to the faster riders so that handicapped times are all similar. This year, however, we decided to run a graded handicap to ensure that a large bunch is not travelling down State Hwy 2.

So, five groups started the race, the scratch pair of Alex West and Robert Stannard having to make up twelve and a half minutes over the 44.6 km course. Barry Wilson lead the limit bunch which, although starting first, contained some quality riders such as Toshi, Chris Compton, Julie Miller, and Thomas Stannard.

In Memory of Brent Ellery

Brent Ellery was a special man, filled with a passion for his family, a passion for life and a passion for cycling.

Brent

Many of you will remember Brent when he came to our Saturday club races, decked out in his warm winter jackets, even through the warmest summer months. Brent loved his cycling and for me, it was always a pleasure to see his smiling face, always willing to end a helping hand or to sweep the track.

Brent and his wife, Cecile, and their two girls Samantha and Kate all played a huge part of Bike Manawatu, both with their strong racing accolades and for the many hours they all put in behind the scenes organizing races and marshalling on the corners. They are an incredible family.

Saturday club TT (25th July)

A beautiful, still mid-winter day saw thirteen riders turn up to do a BM individual TT last weekend. The course was Ashhurst to Pohangina and return. One young rider, Michael Richmond, was there and completed the junior distance of 15 km, the rest of the (mostly much older) competitors did just over 25 km which meant the turn-around was right in the middle of Pohangina village. The event was a perfect excuse for the purists who like to race the clock to bring out their TT bike and fast wheels.

Michael completed the 15 km in a very respectable 28:27 and was the first rider to start and also the first one home. The others started a minute apart with Catriona Pirie next to go followed by triathletes Barry Eccles and Dave Scott with their fast TT rigs.

Robert Stannard arrived late and left last of the 13 riders, and on his trusty red SL3 complete with his 32 spoke training wheels did the fastest time, completing 25.3 km in 38:41. Next fastest was Glen Kirk with 39:13, then Neville Weir with 39:58.

It was great to have some visitors from the Manawatu Triathlon Club join the hardiest BM riders for the event, some of whom are off to the Age Group World Champs in Sept.
