The Country Road Cycle Ride
Selwyn Brown, the organiser of the Country Road Classic gets to ride the course. This is what he thought…
I’ve been looking forward to this ride for quite some time and desperately wanted to get fit enough to ride the course before Sat 16 April the day of the inaugural Manawatu Cycle Classic. I’ve only been back on the bike regularly for about a month so there was a small degree of apprehension as a couple of good mates and some locals headed out of the square and down Fitzherbert Av. The first climb of the day came quickly just as you are leaving town and after crossing the Manawatu River you head up Summerhill Drive. As I reflect it is not that dissimilar to Taupo but much shorter in duration.

Palmerston North cyclists riding to Taupo risked hypothermia as they battled freezing rain and single figure temperatures on the first half of their fundraising challenge yesterday.
But after the “psychological barrier” of the Desert Rd summit, where it was 5 degrees Celsius, spirits lifted for the downhill and increasingly fine ride into Taupo.

The club AGM is to be held at the Marist Clubrooms on Pascal St at 7.30pm on Thursday 28th April.
We will be voting for the two vacant Board positions.

The West Coast North Island Road Race Championship was held in Wanganui on Sunday, April 9th.
The courses were the same as for the Club Nationals to be held in early May. The longer course starts with a flat section from Brunswick Hall before descending down, eventually to SH3. A gentle climb, followed by a slightly less gentle climb on SH3 is followed by a short, tricky descent over a railway crossing to the last, shorter but steeper climb up Western Line back to the finish.
