Starting on corner of Severn & Mercey Streets
Registration TBC 10:15am at HQ – (near the Rongotea Garage carpark on Mersey Street)
Race briefing TBC 10:45am – all riders must attend
First rider off at TBC 11:00am 30 second intervals

Non Members – $10 Flat Rate – for any rider wishing to ride but not yet affiliated to BM or WCNI – Please note you will not be able to run for any of the Bike Manawatu or WCNI trophies.
This is an OPEN event to all riders – *only licenced WCNI riders are eligible for medals* – and Bike Manawatu members eligable for trophies 
Social and non members are welcome to attend the event however will not be eligable for WCNI medals or Bike Manawatu trophies.
We encourage participation and is a good opportunity for those riders wishing to enter the Non-Championship Time Trial category at Age Group Road Nationals.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THIS EVENT

  • Please pre register & make payment online as per the instructions above
  • Please ensure you are aware of the course route – Course notes can be found below
  • Registration will be just before the start line – Please note if there we are in a situation with Covid-19 at the time, please remember to use the 2 meter rule and follow all govt guidelines which include using hand sanitiser provided and to practise social distancing
  • There is hand sanitiser provided in our Bike Manawatu timing van
  • Please do not attend our event if you are unwell

ARRIVAL

  • All parking is to be well off the road – please respect the Rongotea residence and their nature strips I.e please don’t park on the soggy verge
  • Please proceed to registration

START LIST & NUMBERS

  • As we have been trailing for some time the number allocated for this event will be your permanent number for all future BM events. We are redistributing new fabric numbers to all members.
  • Non members will be given a number however if you are not planning to continue to attend Bike Manawatu club events please return your bib number at the completion of the race or you may be invoiced for a replacement.
  • Please look after your race numbers and bring it to ALL club events, we do not have spares for you if you forget it on the day.
  • If you have not received your number yet we will have it ready for you at registration.
  • We aim to have a start list ready and put up on here before our event. Please check back later
  • Race Numbers are to be placed on the left hand side, rear quarter of your race top, readable in the prone riding position.

REGISTRATION

  • Registration will be near the Rongotea Garage carpark on Mersey Street- just up from the start line – There will be a volunteer helping
  • We will have hand sanitiser available at registration
  • If you have a loyalty card these will be at registration for you to click. Likewise, please note that you have used your loyalty card on the start sheet
  • Ensure you give yourself plenty of time to register, pin your number, grab your transponder and go to the start area awaiting the race managers briefing.
  • Please read all notices at the registration desk, a repeat of the rider briefing and safety notes set out below
  • It is your responsibility to ensure your transponder is on correctly if it is not it may not read on our system, therefore you may not receive a finish time.

START/ FINISH & SPECTATORS

  • There will be a start clock at the start line.
  • There will be a holder
  • Riders will start at 30 second intervals.
  • We have Bike Manawatu QR codes available for you to scan in using the NZ Covid Tracer – all riders who have pre registered will have contact tracing details on your online registration, however riders please feel free to use our QR codes too

RIDER BRIEFING

  • The course is a 16km & 23km Time Trial Course.
  • The event starts on corner of Severn & Mercey Streets, ride out Banks Rd, left onto Kaimatarua Rd, turn right down Sansons Rd then onto Main Drain Road, turn around cone, head back to Finish in Mercey Street, Rongotea. – Full course notes below
  • This is an individual time trial. Please do not draft. Overtaking riders please ensure slower rider know you are coming. Please give each other plenty of room while staying left at all times
  • Please remember to respect the locals living on this road.
  • Course lengths are similar to those of Age Group Road Nationals

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

  • Traffic management will be in place, but this is to warn other road uses that we are there.
  • Roads are open and all normal road rules apply (riders must obey NZ road rules at ALL times)
  • Marshals are provided for direction only
  • Riders must give way at all junctions as required.
  • Please be courteous to other road users

Course Specific Notes:

  • Obey the priority on the 1 way bridge and be prepared to give way to oncoming traffic
  • Do not cross the centre line unless safe to do so.
  • We are on narrow quite roads when often there is no white line. Stay left
  • Riders should not exceed 2 abreast
  • Beware of tankers and agricultural machinery
  • Be courteous to other road users
  • The days are shortening so we RECOMMEND the use of a rear light.

Additional Notes:

  • Public toilets just past the centre of Rongotea township
  • We would like to try use our timing system (subject to having a start list released before event) as well as manual timed.

Transponders

  • Each rider will be issued with a Transponder:
  • Your transponder holder should be 4 fingers under the rim (remember to take the sticky tape off the holder and don’t put the cable ties through the spokes)
  • Left hand side of the fork – shiny side facing out
  • Once your finished use some snips and take the length off the cable ties – we will have some at the start line for you.
  • Step 1 – Remove the Backing Tape on the black holder.
    Position black holder on Front LEFT fork, 4 fingers below the top of spokes
    Pull cable ties TIGHT. Ensure Holder remains flush to fork
  • Step 2 – Trim the cable ties with some snips
  • Step 3 – Slide Transponder into holder until it clicks
    Give transponder a gentle tug to ensure it is secure
    To remove transponder press release button and slide it out

U15 – 6.61 meters rollout no aero helmets no TT bars
U17 – 7.00 meters rollout aero helmets clip on TT bars
U19 – 7.93 meters rollout aero helmets TT bars
Non-licensed riders must ride the gearing appropriate to their grade.
All other age groups – open gears

Equipment

Bicycles must conform with current UCI regulations. All bicycles must have two independently operating brakes (one front, one rear).

Helmets must be compliant with appropriate NZ Transport Agency Standards for use on open roads, including those used in the Individual Time Trial and must be worn at all times when riding your bike.

Time Trial

  1. All riders to sign on at the :insert instructions of where sign on is and time between” and report to the start line xx minutes before their start time for gear check.
  2. Race Numbers –  Numbers are to be placed on the left hand side, rear quarter of your race top, readable in the prone riding position. Please ensure your transponder is placed on your bike correctly – see instructions above
  3. Riders will be held on the start line but restrained. If any riders break the start they will incur a 10 second time penalty.
  4. Riders who miss their start may be allowed to start from a stationery held position but their time will be taken from their original scheduled time, OR start at a suitable alternative later time. This will be at the discretion of the starter/ organisers – not the rider.
  5. Support – There is no rider support permitted and no vehicles following or parked out on the course, other than those of the commissaires or race officials. Sanctions and possible disqualification may be imposed if non-authorised vehicles are seen on the course.
  6. A sag wagon will pick up riders who abandon the event. A wheel wagon will not be attending.
  7. Only riders who are in competition are to be on the course. Warm up is not permitted on the course.
  8. Any rider withdrawing from the race must remove their number and advise officials as soon as possible.

Medals and Medal Ceremony.

  1. Medals are awarded on the following basis.
      1. a)In any individual category, 1 rider-1 medal, 2 riders – 2 medal, 3 riders-3 medals.
      2. b)Medals are awarded to centre and non-centre club riders.
      3. c)Records can only be held by centre riders.
  2. All riders shall participate in official ceremonies.
  3. All rider must wear their official club race uniform
  4. No sunglasses, caps etc to be worn on the podium.
  5. Medal winners are to wear their medal around their neck until they have exited the podium area.
  6. Non-club riders are not eligible for medals.

  • Roads are open and all normal road rules apply (riders must obey NZ road rules at ALL times)
  • Marshals are provided for direction and in some places to stop cyclists due to traffic
  • Riders must give way at all junctions as required.
  • Please be courteous to other road users

  • Do not cross the center line unless safe to do so.
  • We are on narrow quite roads when often there is no white line. Stay left
  • Riders should not exceed 2 abreast
  • Beware of trucks, tankers and agricultural machinery
  • Be courteous to other road users
  • We RECOMMEND the use of a rear light.

Start & Meet – Riders will assemble outside in the Pohangina Village
Registration 8.15am at HQ – (near the Bike Manawatu Timing Van) usually near the Pohangina Road / Finnis Road Junction
Race briefing 8:45am – all riders must attend
First grade off at 9am

This event is run as a graded handicapped race
Grades and handicaps will be determined on the date and subject to numbers

The Essex Cup Pohangina course is a 30 km circuit.

History – Essex Cup –  – Ashhurst / Pohangina Race
Harry Essex was a publican who sponsored cycling in the 1950’s. This was a
Traditionally a Handicapped road race from Ashhurst – Pohangina (totara reserve) through the gravel and back approx. 50km

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THIS EVENT

  • Please pre register & make payment online as per the instructions above
  • Please ensure you are aware of the course route – Course notes can be found below
  • Registration will be just before the start line – Please note if there we are in a situation with Covid-19 at the time, please remember to use the 2 meter rule and follow all govt guidelines which include using hand sanitiser provided and to practise social distancing
  • There is hand sanitiser provided in our Bike Manawatu timing van
  • Please do not attend our event if you are unwell

ARRIVAL

  • All parking is to be well off the road – please respect the Pohangina residence and their nature strips I.e please don’t park on the soggy verge
  • Please proceed to registration

START LIST & NUMBERS

  • As we have been trailing for some time the number allocated for this event will be your permanent number for all future BM events. We are redistributing new fabric numbers to all members.
  • Non members will be given a number however if you are not planning to continue to attend Bike Manawatu club events please return your bib number at the completion of the race or you may be invoiced for a replacement.
  • Please look after your race numbers and bring it to ALL club events, we do not have spares for you if you forget it on the day.
  • If you have not received your number yet we will have it ready for you at registration.
  • Race Numbers are to be placed on the left hand side, rear quarter of your race top, readable in the prone riding position.

REGISTRATION

  • Registration will be at in the Pohangina Village near our Timing Van on Pohangina Road. There will be a volunteer helping
  • We will have hand sanitiser available at registration
  • $5 members / $10 non-members – We highly encourage you to pay online Bike Manawatu ANZ 01-0745-0284925-00 please use your name, race number & race name as reference
  • Ensure you give yourself plenty of time to register, pin your number, grab your transponder and go to the start area awaiting the race managers briefing.
  • Numbers are to be placed on the left hand side, rear quarter of your race top.
  • Please read all notices at the registration desk, a repeat of the rider briefing and safety notes set out below
  • It is your responsibility to ensure your transponder is on correctly if it is not it may not read on our system, therefore you may not receive a finish time.

Transponders

  • Each rider will be issued with a Transponder:
  • Your transponder holder should be 4 fingers under the rim (remember to take the sticky tape off the holder and don’t put the cable ties through the spokes)
  • Left hand side of the fork – shiny side facing out
  • Once your finished use some snips and take the length off the cable ties – we will have some at the start line for you.
  • Step 1 – Remove the Backing Tape on the black holder.
