And the Track Rider of the Year goes to….

BikeNZ honoured riders at a special function in Christchurch ahead of the national championships. BikeNZ is the umbrella body embracing all national bike and cycling organsations including Road and Track, BMX, Mountainbike and School cycling.

At the awards ceremony BikeNZ CEO, Kieran Turner said “We felt it important to honour our riders who achieve great things in our sport. While we treasure the efforts and performances of all of our riders, as a very young organisation we felt it was now an appropriate time to increase the awareness of these awards,”

Time Trial Alert

The 40 km time trial is the gold standard for any time trialist and managing to ride the distance in under an hour is a genuine challenge and significant achievement for all but the very talented rider. Sadly the opportunity to ride a 40 km time trial is a rare thing indeed.

However, all is not lost because Wellington Veterans Cycling Club holds a few 40 km time trials within a reasonable driving distance over the summer months. They are a friendly bunch and the club welcomes guests of all ages. If you are not a member there is a small entry fee of $5.00. A number of riders from the Manawatu ride these events each season.

The time trials programmed for this year are:

Sunday 20 February 2011: 40 km TT at Kahutara. Guests of all ages welcome.

Sunday 13 March 2011: 40 km TT at Masterton. Sorry, this is an open event for masters riders only.

Sunday 27 March 2011: 80 km TT around Lake Wairarapa. I know it is not a 40 km time trial, but you can think of it as 2 x 40km J This event is open to all ages.

You can check out the details and enter at www.wvcc.org.nz.

Waihi Madness 2010 – Done!

It is Sunday 12 December, stinking hot, and 57 riders are setting off one at a time to tackle the formidable Waihi Midsummer Madness Time Trial.
This is the toughest road time trial event in New Zealand.  I make it 127km with about 1300 vertical metres of climbing.  There is some great scenery…but I have to admit it is hard to fully appreciate that during the ride.

Ages range from 16 to 77.  There were six women, one tandem, three teams and a whole bunch of guys racing.  The team category was new and required the team members to ride together over the entire course – nice idea for first timers. There were two Palmerston North riders at the start: Jocelyn Goodwin and myself.  It was clear that we would have bolted into the prize for those who travelled the furthest, but sadly the organisers had overlooked that category.
