Bike Manawatu School Cycling Results – 26.08.12 – RR -Ashhurst

The gravel Classic  lived up to its name with a fantastic challenge to riders, a few punctures but overall the feedback from riders was really positive. We will use the track again and recommend it as a club event. Thanks to Ashhurst School parents for marshaling on the course and Ross Castle for dreaming up the track – I think we are onto something special here as the mix of road and gravel will enhance our riders overall bike handling skills. Great turnout with nearly 50 riders, this bodes well for the future of cycling in Manawatu.

A grade split up into a 2 rider race with Nate Levin and Chris Denholm battling it out alone on the last lap, with a sprint finish going to Nate, followed by a group of 3 riders 1 minute back.

Essex Cup Results

Below are the finish times for the race held at Pahiatua.

A controlled start saw 41 riders heading out to the Main highway heading south towards Masterton. A brisk cool wind meant the conditions if a rider was isolated from the bunch would mean it could end up being a hard ride.

This was a sealed handicap race so nobody would tell what the final result was until all the handicaps are revealed. So congratulations must now go to Toshi who with a handicap of 12 minutes was able to take the prize for this year. Cups will be awarded at the end of year prizegiving, however prizemoney will be awarded at the end of the series of the 3 handicap races.

Special thanks to Steve Glasgow and Kevin Laskey for organising this race. Thanks also to the lead motorbike riden by Brian, marshals Steve, Jenny and Don and to Don Katrina and Catriona who helped on the finish line. Also thanks to Rebecca for being the tail vehicle.

Thanks also to Carol Roberts for organising the afternoon tea.

Prizemoney up for grabs

Over the next three weeks we are running a series of 3 handicap races.

The first will be this week at Pahiatua with registration at the Pahiatua Sports Centre. This weeks race is a sealed handicap race – that means no one knows what their handicap is, it is a bunch start and the resulting finish time is then adjusted for your handicap to give a finish place.

Race starts at 1.30pm To view the course click here. There is a shorter route for younger riders. Bring a plate for afternoon tea at the conclusion of racing.

All place getters this week will then be allocated points according to their placing.

On Saturday 1st September, the second race in the series will be held starting at Ashhurst library out to Highland Home and return. Shorter course again available for D grade riders.

First rider off at 1.30pm.

The final in the series again starts from Ashhurst on Saturday 8th September. This is the race over the Pohangina circuit which includes a few kilometres of gravel. Click here to view the route and elevation.

Registration at Ashhurst library at 1pm. First rider off at 1.30pm. Prizegiving at Fusion Cafe at conclusion. Entry fees apply to all of these races.

Please advise if you are not riding and are able to help on the day by sending an email to secretary@bikemanawatu.co.nz

Bone Collector results

It was great to have a good turn out on what was a lovely afternoon.

The Bone Collector course this year had changed and team requirements had also changed. With a bit of juggling at registration all of the people that had not preregistered in a team were able to find a spot.

Special thanks to Matt van Wagtendonk for being the race organiser on the day. Thanks also to the marshalls, Jason Kinghorn and Matt Levin, on the course and Joanne Stewart and Anna for doing the registrations.

The first lap saw one rider get a small break from the rest of the 1st riders on the approach to Whitelocks letterbox and there was one rider that was trailling the rest at this point. But looking at the results (thanks to Paul Roberts and Matt van Wagtendonk) the split times show that the pace did not alter a lot for each subsequent lap.
