4am, the alarm goes off; who would have imagined three years of training would have come down to this day? I managed to fall asleep at 9 the night before and not wake up until the next morning – one of the best pre race sleeps I’ve ever had. Eating breakfast at this time of the morning is never an easy task for me but with Kate on the ball she was shoving eggs down my throat before I could say no. By 5am we were in the car heading down the Queen K on the way to the start.
We headed inside the tent to get our body marking done, then it was off to do the final checks on the bike – drink bottles, helmet, shoes and then wait in the huge line for the portaloo. One last nervous check of the bike then I was off to find Kate and the rest of the support crew (Sue’s family). On went my kit and loads of sunscreen. Before I knew it the pros were starting at 6:30am and Mike Riley started calling the age groupers into the water.
Avanti Plus Tour of the Wairarapa.
Sunday 13th November
Under near perfect conditions the hill climb champs for all age groups was held on Saturday 29 October.
Due to the closure of the Manawatu Gorge an alternative venue from previous years had to be used.
Although it was a short course it was a challenge for all of those who decided to test themselves.
Starting from the far bridge on Tiritea Rd riders were set off at 30 sec intervals and raced back along Tiritea and turned left onto Ngahere Park Rd.
The total distance was 4km but with a couple of very steep climbs on Ngahere Park Rd the course was a real challenge for some of the younger riders.
Excellent news… BikeNZ have introduced a non-racing (Social rider) membership, which might help reduce the membership cost foe some of you.
We again have a number of categories of membership depending on how involved you want to be in cycling events.
The different types of membership are:
Social membership $40 $50 which allows you to participate in social rides only.
Club membership $70 which allows you to participate in club races and club championship events.
