So much on offer this weekend

People from the Manawatu have travelled all over the country this weekend to compete in events.

Many have travelled to Blenheim to compete in the 10th Graperide, others have gone to Rotorua for the 100k flyer and a lot of the juniors have gone to Waipukurau to compete in the CHB junior tour.

For those that stayed in the Manawatu we had on offer a 2 up time trial at Kairanga. It was raced over the normal course but it was extended right to the end of Lockwood Loop where Barry Gilliland kindly acted as marshall ensuring everyone made it around the turn point.

The first riders off were the youngest riders Samuel Phillips and Fergus Washington-Smith from PNINS. They had a very tidy turn and good technique according to Barry and completed the 29kms in 58 mins 37 secs

The next to head off were the pairing of Greg Baker and Nigel Doyle. Combined age in excess of 100. A net time of 51 mins and 16 secs

The final pairing was Stephen Stannard and Peter O’Sullivan who completed the course in a net time of 42 mins and 59 secs

Sunday is the Masters Age group hill climb champs at Ashhurst starting at the top of the hill before heading down over the bridge and up the Saddle Rd.

A good group of people have registered to complete the 6km course.

Call for Volunteers to support the Feilding Festival of Cycling

Call for Volunteers to support the Feilding Festival of Cycling

clip_image002The Feilding Festival of Cycling (FFoC) is plotted for September 20 and 21. While there is roughly six months before the event actually kicks off, planning has commenced with a small core of volunteers from within the club who have formed the nucleus of the coordination committee.

The FFoC is one of Bike Manawatu’s key events in its annual calendar that seeks to achieve a number of outcomes. In addition to making a reasonable donation to the Order of St John in 2013, the event raised over $6K to contribute to the club’s balance sheet. For 2014 the committee seeks to improve across some key areas but this is entirely dependent upon the level of support the committee receives.

Many of us are already acutely aware that the success of many clubs and other community minded organisations is based upon the contribution of volunteers. Bike Manawatu is certainly no different in this regard and in 2013 the FFoC was lucky to have the support of Anne Redgrave, Matthis van Wagtendonk, Steve Challies and a number of other stalwarts.

Rongotea course

The course for the  riders that had to complete 15km was from the outskirts of Rongotea to the turn point at Taikorea Rd intersection and back to Rongotea.

For the riders that had to complete 25km the course went in the same direction to just past Hoihere Rd and the old dairy factory and again returning to Rongotea.

An unfavourable head wind hindered the return journey for all riders.

A large number of volunteers helped on the day including Grant Shearman, Wayne Fenn, Carol Roberts, John Arbuckle, Dave Drummond all out on the course,  Mike Simpson as commissaire, and Matt Levin who used the new timing equipment. Special thanks to all those that assisted including those at the start and finish lines.
