Don’t Forget “Club Happy Hour” This Friday

Club Road Champs Attracts 55 Members to Race
It’s seems our club spirt is alive and well as young and older members were quick to spread the word about last weekend’s club champs at Colyton which the club appreciates. 55 members lined up and registered to race the safe and challenging Hiwinui circuit at different distances. 18km,36km,54km and 72km. A good combination of roughly where schools’ riders and the other half masters.
All age groups were well catered for in competitive grades by race organiser and board member Mike Craine. Mike and his team of volunteers did a fantastic job and we thank them.

People who have not raced before were buzzing after their ride and some of our more experienced and competitive masters riders were also buzzing having had the opportunity to race against under 23 club and national stars like Campbell Stewart and other young and upcoming riders which they said was a fantastic learning experience.
All and all, members young and old thoroughly enjoyed the two hours afternoon of racing and the word is people want more racing.
If people are prepared to put there hand to help out as we experience this time round them we will address the race calendar and see what we can organise further events. In doing so maybe afterwards we will be able to all stay on for a social hour and a cup of tea.

Manfeild 6 Hour Challenge.-21st of May
The next Bike Manawatu fun day out is the Manfeild 6 Hour Challenge which has been a massive success since it began with riders who have thoroughly enjoyed the day whether doing the solo or in a team. Racing starts: 1.30pm
The Hiwinui 18km circuit is a familiar safe circuit to most cyclist in the Manawatu. That is why we invite all members who are interested in trying out graded racing to come along on Saturday to ride or help out. The circuit is close to home and you will be fit enough after your summer season of riding and events and at only $5 the event is extremely affordable. Just bring yourself and or your cycling buddies and enjoy the outing at whatever level or grade you are at. It will be all over in around two hours for everyone. This kind of fun unites people and our club. Check out graded rides and on the day the race organisers we will manage which grade suits you. See you there.

Michaela Drummond Bronze at World Track Cycling Champs
Congratulations to Michaela Drummond and her amazing Bronze medal performance in the team pursuit at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships, the first NZ women’s team since 2011 to have medalled in this event. To top that off, this is Michaela’s first year at elite level and she clocked a personal best time of 4.20.17. A huge effort.
Her successful world championships didn’t stop there. The gruelling Madison and her outstanding ride for 4th place in the Madison in only her and her team mate Racquel Sheath fifth time of riding the Madison was an eye opener.
Our local girl and her support team have done themselves, the club and New Zealand proud and will hopefully inspire all club cyclists what is possible to achieve.
Bike Manawatu Board
Please join us to congratulate two newly voted on board members Tim Lloyd and James Denholm who are well known to Bike Manawatu members. Firstly, Tim who is a masters cyclist who has been heavily involved with Schools cycling over the past few years brings his contagious enthusiasm for the sport to the board. Secondly James at only 20 years old will bring fresh new ideas and a wealth of cycling knowledge to our board for his young years. Two great people to represent our club.
It is exciting times ahead as the club looks to unite all club members. Our current board of Peter McCarthy, Mike Craine, Tim Lloyd, James Denholm and myself look forward to your support as the club build on the love we all have for cycling.

Easter is often all about kids and families enjoying far too many Easter eggs and hot cross buns while having quality time together. Cyclists will of course be keeping an eye on the weather to sneak out and cycle off all that chocolate. Whatever you are up to enjoy your Easter and stay safe on the bike as debris and slips are often forgotten when the weather does fine up.

A strong contingent of Bike Manawatu members went to Hawera to compete in the West Coast North Island road Championships last weekend.The results for the green team were fantastic with a sea of members on the podium accepting Gold,Silver or Bronze.Racing was competitive and challenging and the club congratulate all those members who competed.Join with us in congratulating the following members;

The following were unable to contest the WCNI champs due to attending an under 17 development camp. They raced the Waikato Bay of Plenty Champs which was run over the Nationals course in a large field of 47 riders. Race placing:13th Ethan Craine,27th Kyle Hoskin, 32nd Angus Clausen,37th Michael Richmond.
Track Prize Giving a Great Night.
Held at the Marist Sports Club this week the annual Club Track Prize giving was once again a well organised and run evening by Ian Gray and Kate Stewart. An excellent turn out and some remarkable new records set this year tells us the future looks bright for this popular cycling discipline. The prize giving results will be posted. Congratulations to everyone who contests the club track series at the Feilding track and special congratulations to all those who received awards. Well done.
We pay tribute to Libby Arbuckle for an outstanding year and for her winning the Clubs most improved rider. Her rise to make the New Zealand team is a proud moment for Libby, her family, her coach Mike McRedmond and of course all of Libby’s friends and supporters.
Positive Club AGM
After posting my club chairperson annual report in the newsletter last week and sharing it at the AGM, the feedback has been positive and supportive from members towards the uniting of schools and masters to combine the resources of both for more club road races.
The power of any great club often comes down to the loyalty, unity and passion that all members have toward their club and each other. We see this illustrated by the unwavering loyalty of club members and devoted fans of house hold club names like Arsenal or Liverpool and other great clubs around the world no matter what their results or financial situation is. Wouldn’t that be something great for our club to aim for?
To conduct more graded races for all levels of members (A,B,C,D grade)here in the Manawatu can happen with rider support. At the AGM some people put their hand up to help out as a race volunteer for one race event which was fantastic and appreciated. The more people that put their hand up to help out with one event, the quicker we will be able to plan a road race series for everyone to try out and enjoy.
