Communique No. 2

Selectors have confirmed some successful candidates for the Track Nationals 7 – 10 March and need to observe others one more time to complete the WCNI Team.
We are needing to complete the entry form by Sunday evening so with that in mind, we urge all riders to attend the River City Wheel Race Event in Wanganui this Saturday so we can get a final look at you.

I know some of you will feel this is doubling up, but there are some riders we are yet to hear from and we need the above confirmed via email to ensure there is no misunderstanding on anyone’s part.

We will advise successful athletes of an information evening we are planning for next week where all questions can be answered, skin suits organized etc.

Also a shout out for helpers as we have upwards of 26 riders and just 3-4 helpers for the event. Normally we require 1 handler per 5 riders plus a coach and manager and assistant manager so upwards of 8 helpers. Helpers must have current race or handlers licence but we wont be able to send all the riders without the appropriate level of support. Gravel and Tar, Slicks and Stones Wrap-up for 2019

Well, the Gravel and Tar UCI races and the Slicks and Stones 100 event, were run and won for 2019
on January 19th. And what a day it was! With twelve men’s teams in the Classic and eight women’s
teams in the La Femme, the professional races lived up to their name as being the hardest one-day
races in Australasia.

The men’s event was taken out by local rider Luke Mudgway riding for EvoPro, the Irish registered
Continental team, whilst the women’s event went to Brodie Chapman from Australia, riding for the
Oceania Women’s Cycling team.

Interviewed at the finish line, Brodie commented, “That’s the most fun I’ve had on a bike in one day,
ever!”. And she called that, “fun”?

For Slicks and Stones riders, there was just as much fun. Run over approx. 100kms and covering the
same 40 kms of gravel as the pro events, 49 intrepid riders started. The quality of the field can be
gauged by the fact that 44 of the 49 completed the event, with the first over the line, Brendan
Sharratt (Wanganui) completing the distance at an average of 34.8 km/h. He was closely followed by
Carlos Lopez-Lozano (Palmerston North) and Andrew Pointon.

For those of you thinking about doing the Slicks and Stones Challenge next year, here are a few of
the many comments from those who participated in 2019 …

I think you guys have something pretty special with this event… Really looking forward to it
again next year.

The course was great! Thanks to all that made the event possible.

That was spectacular! Thank you for the awesome event – I’ll definitely be back next year.

Wellington Junior Track Champs 2019

This post is dedicated to all of our junior riders, their families & supporters who attended today’s Wellington Junior Track Champs. 9 riders, 14 medals, 7 golds, 3 silvers & 4 bronze medals were our total haul. I cannot emphasize enough how proud we were to see our junior riders compete with passion, maintain their safety, show empathy, respect & appreciation to all those present. We certainly livened things up. You have all represented the Bike Manawatu Track Cycling Club with honour, integrity, & pride with distinction of the highest calibre. I personally would like to thank each & everyone of you for taking the time to race today.

Volunteering

Volunteering

Being a member of any club, the call for volunteers is something we all hear a lot.  Over the years I have volunteered a lot of my time to swimming clubs, School Boards, various school committees, coached children’s sports teams and I’ve even been known to man the BBQ at the odd sausage sizzle.  However, with cycling (apart from being a member of the Bike Manawatu Board), the majority of my interaction with volunteers has been as a competitor, thanking the Marshall’s as I ride past.

At the end of 2017 I decided to try and give something back, so I volunteered to help out with the Novice Tour, I drove the Lead Car for the U17 Girls Road Race.  It was a totally new experience viewing the race from this angle, and really quite inspiring to see so many young cyclists participating in the tour and thoroughly enjoying themselves.  And the weekend before last, as I wasn’t riding the Slicks and Stones event, I decided to volunteer for this as well, again it was fantastic to be out there helping a local event and viewing the race from a different angle, and it was somewhat rewarding to be able to give something back to a sport that has given me so much over the years.

As you know, we are currently recruiting volunteers for this years Novice Tour.  This event has been running since 1974, and previous tour winners include well known cyclists Eric MacKenzie, Gary Anderson, Cath Cheatley, Greg Henderson and Campbell Stewart to name a few.

While the Tour is a weekend long event, any time you can spare would be a huge help, and what a great way to help your club and the future superstars of the New Zealand cycling scene – we’ve all seen from our clubs U23 riders at the Elite Nationals what the depth of youth cycling is in the mighty Manawatu.
