Sunday recreational ride route survey results

Recently we change the planning of the Sunday Recreational Rides so that the ride coordinators chose the courses on the day.
We promised to get your feedback on that change. Here are the results:

In the survey responses, it was clear that ride routes published ahead of time are preferred, however you also said change on the day is OK, giving the ride coordinators some flexibility.

We will start publishing the planned routes again in the weekly newsletter, but the actual route on the day is still the coordinator’s choice. Weather, wind direction, sunstrike, even the group makeup or just the coordinator’s preference are all valid reasons for a change of route.

Changes to the Sunday Ride Route Planning

As you probably know, BikeManawatu organises a bunch ride every Sunday. Recently the Sunday ride organisers agreed to trial a new way to choose the routes.

Up till now, Mike Keenan and Ken Young maintained a list of paired rides, using routes from the list of rides on the website, and Vaughan would include these in the weekly newsletter.

However we would like to give the ride organisers more freedom to choose the ride routes based on weather conditions, wind direction, sunstrike etc.  Maybe even with some input from the riders at Memorial Park on the day.

So from next week we won’t be publicising the routes in the newsletter ahead of time and they will be selected on the day.

This is a trial and we will be soliciting your feedback in a few weeks.

Sunday Rides Meeting Wednesday 15th June 2022

Recently the Sunday recreational ride organisers and some of the board got together to discuss issues and improvements to the Sunday rides.
Minutes below

Commenced: 5:33 pm
Present: Michael Craine, Keryn Paekau, Tim Lloyd, Michelle Turner, Andrew Ward, Mike Keenan, Garry Buys, Colin Anderson
Virtual – Google Meeting: Vaughan Hunt, Ken Young

  • Welcome and thank you to everyone who attended
  • Mike mentioned that the board have received several complaints around our Sunday Rides and we need to hone on in on our cycling etiquette and the perception this is having on us as a club.
  • Although many riders of the Sunday rides are not members of Bike Manawatu, member or not anyone attending a Bike Manawatu organised ride is a reflection on our club as a whole The board needs to be assured that things will improve.
  • Garry would like to be know when a complaint is received – Ride Coordinators to be given a copy of the complaint when received by the board
  • A couple of the major complaints being toilet etiquette e.g when a rider used a fence instead of a bathroom, and when sexist / derogatory abuse was hurled at a group of young triathletes – these are not acceptable, and we need to be careful how we are “seen” by the
    public.
  • A big issue that was identified was the race to the coffee shop and the break down of etiquette.
  • Garry suggested that we need to introduce from the 50km sign – to neutralise the bunch.
  • Our riders need to have some pride and be aware of how they ride their bike Mike K, said Ride Coordinators can reinforce the expectations at the start of the rides to the groups about the need to improve their etiquette and obey road rules but an issue faced is the lack of respect of our riders in attendance to the coordinators.
  • Currently have a group of fast of A grade riders who have terrible etiquette

2022 Trusthouse Teams Series

After another hugely successful time for local riders in the 2021 series, we at Bike Manawatu are in the process of putting together our teams for this years Trusthouse Teams Series.

This series has 4 categories/grades and is run over 5 races from September to December in the Wairarapa – it is a lot of fun, and with the lack of major events, this series helps us all get some good quality racing.

If you are interested in taking part, or would like to have a chat about what is involved with the series and grades, please contact me at michellet@pb.co.nz before 24 June.

I would like to have our teams finalised prior the Kapiti Winter Series, as it would be great to have a solid contingent from Bike Manawatu, to not only show support for a neighbouring clubs events, but to also use this series to ride together as a team, and know our teams strengths before the trusthouse series
