Gorge update

Below is the latest update on the gorge.

Current situation

Ongoing safety concerns mean that machine clearing work has been halted since the 17 October slip.   The instability of the hillside and on-going slips are the key challenges to overcome.  Risks around allowing work crews to operate below the slip face and clear the road have been deemed too high to continue.  Safety must be our first priority, and the manned operation has been removed from the site.  This decision was informed by 3 independent geological specialists.

The hillside where the slip has occurred is part of a prehistoric landslip, thought to have formed thousands of years ago during the formation of the gorge.

Chris Foggin appointed to regional development coordinator

The other exciting piece of news is Bike NZ has appointed Chris Foggin to be the regional development coordinator. Chris will be based here in the Manawatu.

He attended a Bike Manawatu board meeting on 18 Oct to spell out aspects of his job description but it would appear that he can assist the club in achieving its aspirations and goals to develop some coaching capacity within the club.

The boards sees Chris’s appointment as a very positive step forward.

Cycling survey – Update

For those that have completed the online survey on the Bike Manawatu web – thanks very much.  We’ve had 23 respondents so far, somewhat smaller than expected but nevertheless appreciated. The results have so far have not been surprising but the result do paint an indicative picture of where the training and coaching needs are and what are the greatest areas of need.

The survey is still open so if you want to add some value please complete the survey

We want to raise our club profile

We want to raise our club profile

We  want  to raise the profile of Bike Manawatu as a club and  seek opportunities to give ourselves some wider exposure.

BikeManawatuHere’s one easy and simple way to expose our club – by wearing Bike Manawatu branded kit.

If you are planning to ride the Tour de Manawatu this year and you have  some Bike Manawatu branded cycling gear, we are asking you to wear it.

We will also make a similar request for those aspiring to give the Lake Taupo Challenge a go this year as well as any other fun ride.
