Track Cycling Feilding

An excellent nights racing between the 23 riders that rolled up tonight. It was a stellar night for weather and the by the time the four riders went for their respective flying one lap records the wind had dropped completely. The highlight of the night was the breaking of three track records. First was to Lachie Ferguson who shaved 0.07 seconds off his own under 17 boys record by travelling the distance in 27.33sec. Second up was Kate Stewart who took 0.18sec off her under 15 girls record, riding 32.54sec and then Megan Blatchford completely smashed Catherine Cheatley’s senior women’s record, taking off a massive 1.8 seconds to record 27.92 sec. Well done to all 3 riders!!!

In the under 17 and under 15 grade races three riders stood out on the night, Liam Barber showed improvement and used his good handicaps well to record a 1^st and a 2^nd Kate Stewart rode well to record two 2^nds and sprinted particularly strong to sprint the bunch home for second in the long 7 lap handicap. Josh Kendall rode well off the scratch mark on his own to pull the field in the 4 lap and 7 lap handicap races showing his strength and will be a rider to watch in the future.

In the A and B grade the feature race of the night Matiu Kaihau showed his class, just recently returned from Oceania Track Cycling Championships in Australia, to ride from scratch and to win ever so comfortably. Damien Lardner, who gave his finest performance ever on the Feilding track, being the only rider to go with Matiu for 3 laps only to be dropped with just over 2 to go, but managed to hold on for 2^nd: while Megan Blatchford capped off a fine night by sprinting the bunch home for third.

Wednesday ITT summer series round 7 results

Last week in round 6 Jocelyn Goodwin like many others rode a personal best. In her case though this PB was also a new course record for women. Well done Jocelyn. This week it was harder to break PB’s maybe due to the weather and fitness levels are back on high. Next week round 8 the last round to collect points. Round 9 will be the prizegiving round.

Track Cycling Feilding

Another dry clear sky greeted the riders but the cool South-westerly ensured the bikinis and board shorts stayed out of sight. The stellar appearance tonight was left to a restored war plane humming away in the sky above resplendent in camouflage livery and red nose cone. While the wind was a factor in preventing Lachie Ferguson’s gutsy effort to break his own under 17 flying lap record it was not enough to impact significantly of the nights results.

We had another good turn out of 22 riders with a few being new for the season but not new to the track and still we had riders away, so we certainly do have a solid core of riders and potential to move into the 30 plus category. If this line sounds familiar, you are right as it was the same in last weeks report but still valid.

The racing started with graded warm up races of 4 to 6 laps followed by Lachie’s record attempt that came up a second short on the time he set last season, but with the right conditions or an indoor velodrome Lachie has the ability to set a very challenging record. The warm up races are used to give the handicapper, Ian Gray a guide in estimating the respective handicaps for the nights handicap races. The riders competed in 2 to 3 lap and 1 lap handicap races in their grades followed by longer 10 to 12 lap handicap races. The handicapper performed the magic required to treat the spectators to some superb tight finishes with riders spread 4 and 5 wide across the narrow track dragging all power and speed from their tiring legs and warming the spirits of the cold and hypothermic spectators.

Rider of the night was Sean Whitehouse with a strong and dominant performance with 3 wins and a third, all from the scratch mark. The third was in the best race of the night when he finished within a wheel width to the winner Cameron Gibbons.
