WCNI Road Race Championships – April 2011

West Coast North IslandThe West Coast North Island Road Race Championship was held in Wanganui on Sunday, April 9th.

The courses were the same as for the Club Nationals to be held in early May. The longer course starts with a flat section from Brunswick Hall before descending down, eventually to SH3. A gentle climb, followed by a slightly less gentle climb on SH3 is followed by a short, tricky descent over a railway crossing to the last, shorter but steeper climb up Western Line back to the finish.

Track Prizegiving

The prizegiving for road bikes on the track and track bikes was held on Tuesday night. We had a great turn out of riders and parents and supporters.

The evening started with a welcome from Paul van Velthooven, chairperson of the Bike Manawatu board. He commented on the approaching date for the announcement of the successful bid for the Cycling Centre of Excellence.

Greg Bryan gave a summary of the Monday night road bikes. Only 1 night was cancelled during the season and that was due to wind. A range of ages were catered for. Everyone improved over the season. This could be verified by looking at times for selected events at the start of the season and comparing them to times for the same events later in the season.

Well it all started in a hiss & a roar, a new age in Endurance cycling—the Young bucks have arrived & are keen to boogie. Got to be good for the Sport with this new interest, but heh !!—not so good for the almost OAP cyclist.

Once the group of 8 starters (from 11 entrants) reached the Grove road bridge, attack after attack seemed to be the *order* of the day. I joined in the *games* with caution, hell we’d only ridden about 15k, and still had 485k to go.

Matiu Kaihau at start (photo Kirsty Kaihau) A good turn out including some late entries enjoyed the new course along Tangimoana Rd.

A mail drop had been done along the road a few days before the event which meant that a few of the locals came out and sat at their gates to clap and cheer for the riders as they went past.

A slight wind was apparent but it did not stop some good times being recorded – a stellar effort – from Matiu Kaihau who posted the fastest time on the 25km course.

Mark Findlay (photo Kirsty Kaihau) Bike Manawatu fielded a 30 man strong team for the 3rd edition of the Ultimo Central Hawkes Bay Junior Tour. Rachel Southee, Mark Findlay, Michaela Drummond and Emily Shearman rode very well all claiming second places in their grade.

Except for the U13 boys BM had entries in all the grades. It is very pleasing to see that in their inaugural year BM has juniors competing in all age groups.
