TAUPO TRAINING RIDE 140 KM – SUNDAY 16th NOVEMBER 2014
If you have entered this years Taupo Great Lake 160 km event Bike Manawatu is providing on Sunday 16th November 2014 an opportunity for a 140km circuit training ride starting from and finishing in Palmerston North. Depending on numbers and abilities bunch(es) to depart from Memorial Park starting from 7.00AM.
The circuit from Palmerston North is Stoney Creek Road, Campbells Road, Feilding, Sandon Road to Mt Biggs, Ngaio Road and Mingaroa Road to Kakariki, SH 1 to Hunterville where we will make a café stop. From Hunterville proceed via Vinegar Hill to Rewa, Waituna West, turn right down Williamson Road, turn left to Dunolly Road to Short Road, to Makino Road, Feilding, Reids Line, Dixons Line, Bunnythorpe, Tutaki Road to finish in Palmerston North.
LOST/FOUND – CYCLING JACKET
A male cyclist circum-navigating the Apiti circuit on Saturday 25th October dropped a fluro-yellow “Route 7” light-weight jacket out of the pocket of his cycling shirt. If you think this is yours please contact Mike Keenan on ph 3586318.
Update from the Board
Dear Members,
I thought it was about time I provided the membership with an update from the Board in my capacity as interim Chair of Bike Manawatu (BM).
Board membership
Paul’s shoes are very large ones to fill. He has left the Board and the organisation in good shape, and I hope, in the short term at least, I can do as good a job as he. I will continue as Chair until the AGM, at which point we will see who is on the Board from that point forward. In accordance with the BM Constitution, the elected Board then will elect a Chair for a one-year term.
With Paul’s resignation however, and that of Sue MacMaster more recently, there are two spots on the Board to fill. The Board has the power to co-opt two members to the Board and one of these positions has been filled by Brendon Hapeta. We welcome Brendon’s business knowledge and enthusiasm and support for cycling, and I’m certain he will be able to help us successfully achieve our goals. The Board thus consists of: Steve Stannard (Chair), Mike Christie (Deputy Chair), Iona McCarthy, Marcel Hollenstein, Kelly Johnson, and Brendon Hapeta. Glenys Taylor is the secretary of BM, reporting to the Board.
Awards and prizes
It’s notable that mid-October signals the beginning of prize-giving “season” in the Manawatu. We have a number of members nominated for and finalists for awards at a variety of prize-giving functions. Last night I attended the Girls High Sports Awards and it was great to see so many cyclists receiving commendations for their performances through the year.
These prize-giving events culminate with the Manawatu Sports Awards on the 7th of Nov; we have quite a number of BM riders in there as finalists, including Jesse and Simon in the Sportsman of the Year category. Good luck to all finalists!
“Rescue Helicopter” lucky draw
On Thursday the 9th of October we met Lance at the Feildair hanger where the helicopter is kept and after a safety briefing we (with brother Adam) boarded the chopper and flew out.
Our flight took us round Longburn and over Linton military base then along the hills as we got an aerial view of the windmills that dotted the ranges. The helicopter then flew round the front of the gorge and headed back over Ashhurst towards Palmerston North to land at the airport where Lance demonstrated the hovering abilities of the chopper as he landed back on the platform from which we had taken off from only 20min earlier.
Flying in a chopper is quite different to flying in a plane, the noise, movement and ability to go any direction you want. This 20 minute helicopter flight was the first time I had flown in a helicopter and I would rate it up there as one of the best things I have done.
Big thanks must go to Bike Manawatu and the Rescue Helicopter Trust for providing me with this opportunity to take the helicopter flight.
