USO-“UNDERSTANDING-STRENGTHENING-OVERCOMING”
On October 13th – 26th, 2012, a group of 10 Pacific Island and Maori men including our own club member, Kelly Lawton, started their journey at Cape Reinga to cycle south on a mission to ride the length of the country to raise cancer awareness for Pacific Island and Maori men who feature poorly in the statistics. The Cheltenham handicap race is to be held the week after Labour weekend. Last year the race was shifted to a new course as there was major roadworks occurring on the previously used course for this event. The new courses started and finished at the Chelty Hotel in Cheltenham – an appropriate place for the name of the event.
This year to make the event special we are adding a recreational grade. This is for all those people that want to have a go but do not want to race as such. At the end of the event John Arbuckle is putting up a dozen Tuis as a prize for the first recreational rider home. And for those who want a beer before they head out on the course the bar will be open. Of course the bar will be open again at the end of the race.
Registration is at the Chelty Hotel at 1pm. First grade off will be the recreational grade at 1.30pm. There is a shorter distance for junior riders. Have a look at the website calendar for more details.

The Standing Start is an important skill for all track riders. It can make the difference between winning and losing, when riding events such as the kilo, 500m TT, keirin, pursuit and derby races. A big part of being a fast starter is learning the correct technique. Brent Zimmerman, master’s track cyclist, was one of the fastest starters in New Zealand when competing in his youth. Come and learn from Brent. He will teach you how to improve your standing starts. This practical coaching clinic is strictly limited to a small number of participants. If there is sufficient demand, another session will be scheduled afterwards.
You must register to reserve your space as number’s are limited.
