Track Cycling Results–9th Nov 2010

Last week it was impossible to want for a better night for track racing but tonight it was better again- clearly nothing is impossible. This weeks stella landing was Commonwealth games medallist, Japanese Kerin jockey and local boy Simon van Velthooven. Another good turnout from the cyclists with 24 riders across the grades.

A few new faces and a few absentees indicating that should we get a full turnout we may require resource consent for extra seating. The audience was given an early indicator of Simon’s entertainment value with a display of power + talent = speed in the first race. The second A grade handicap race saw Simon give the next best A graders 120 metres head start over the 7 lap race. We all saw the above speed equation to full effect as he chewed up the gap to be in striking distance with still 3 laps to go, he pulled up then as is objective was to work on his starts and we could all see objective was achieved. Like last week we saw close competitive racing with some very tight finishes the 4 lap B grade handicap race in particular having three riders diving for the line at once with all three being within a wheel of each other James Hutton won the judges decision and can enjoy bragging rights until the next one. A special mention for under 17 rider George Roberts with 4 race wins from 4 starts. The final 15 lap handicap race had extra spice added to it with the generous donation by Simon of a New Zealand cycling top the race and the top was won by Mike McMinn he displayed good fighting qualities and making good use of his handicap.
