Quiz night success

Despite the current ‘cost of living challenges’ facing all community events, Bike Manawatu is 100% committed to ensuring the 51st year of the Novice Tour – once again provides a safe, fun, competitive cycle racing event.

We will adopt a high-quality assured approach in implementing the Local Roading Authority’s/Cycling New Zealand’s ‘Safe Traffic Management System’ (STMS) standards which ensure best practices and rider and spectator safety.

If the level of community funding secured is not sufficient to contract in external road management service providers with the ability to stop/go traffic, the Novice Tour will proceed on a ‘local club racing’ model, whereby our team of trained/experienced road marshals will, where necessary, pause racing in order to give way to traffic and ensure rider safety.

Although funding  external road management services with the ability to stop/go traffic is ideal, if this is not feasible – we are confident that the event’s ‘Safe Traffic Management System’ (STMS) will provide a competitive, fair, enjoyable and importantly safe racing environment.

Irrespective of which model of traffic management/racing is finalised, as with all CNZ/Bike Manawatu events, normal road rules will apply and a full rider briefing confirming the event rules will be provided to all riders prior to the start of each race.

With the tables set, the doors opened and the crowd started flowing in. A total of 14 tables filled the Marist Clubrooms  with team names ranging from “The Never Weres”  – a take on the “has beens”  to “Who’s Paying” and “Triathletes Can ride Bikes”  the night was set to be a fun event.

The quiz master for the night, William Taylor, stated the obvious rules and housekeeping matters including where the bar was located and that drinks to him would be taken as bribes.

The first round was the photo round and with an obvious advantage the Palmy Pack took a strong lead with a perfect score.

Round 2 saw a range of scores from 7 to 15 scored by “Go Home Aussies”  which helped them claw back the gap between them and the Palmy Pack

With questions like Where would you be if you didn’t have your feet in your gumboots?  And the answer “You’d be in the hospital or infirmary” there was enough light hearted questions to keep everyone amused and sometimes bewildered.

A simple maths question in round 5 had some amasing answers.  Ruth needed 33kg of berries to make berry jam. She had 8 kg of Strawberries and 8 kg of blueberries . How many more kgs did she need.  A few true false questions and multi choice meant that each team was able to get points on every round.

The Go  Home Aussies were the eventual winners. In the first round where there was an obvious photo of the Great Australian Bite they didn’t even get that one right and so were awarded a bag of onions to clear their eyes for future rounds.

A fun night was had by all and a good amount of money was raised for the junior development fund.

Thanks to the sponsors and organisers and quiz master and judges.
