NOMINATIONS OPEN: PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD

Despite the current ‘cost of living challenges’ facing all community events, Bike Manawatu is 100% committed to ensuring the 51st year of the Novice Tour – once again provides a safe, fun, competitive cycle racing event.

We will adopt a high-quality assured approach in implementing the Local Roading Authority’s/Cycling New Zealand’s ‘Safe Traffic Management System’ (STMS) standards which ensure best practices and rider and spectator safety.

If the level of community funding secured is not sufficient to contract in external road management service providers with the ability to stop/go traffic, the Novice Tour will proceed on a ‘local club racing’ model, whereby our team of trained/experienced road marshals will, where necessary, pause racing in order to give way to traffic and ensure rider safety.

Although funding  external road management services with the ability to stop/go traffic is ideal, if this is not feasible – we are confident that the event’s ‘Safe Traffic Management System’ (STMS) will provide a competitive, fair, enjoyable and importantly safe racing environment.

Irrespective of which model of traffic management/racing is finalised, as with all CNZ/Bike Manawatu events, normal road rules will apply and a full rider briefing confirming the event rules will be provided to all riders prior to the start of each race.

BikeNZ is giving you the chance to recognise your favourite New Zealand cyclist with the BikeNZ Road and Track People’s Choice Award.

If you think our very own Jesse Sergent or Simon van Velthooven are legends and are deserving of the honour then nominate them.

Nominate them for the honour of being New Zealand’s favourite cyclist.

The previously self-proclaimed “people’s champion” Gordon McCauley was formally awarded the 2011 title at the BikeNZ Road & Track Rider of the Year Awards Ceremony earlier this year.

Gordy was loved by the people for “the Commonwealth Games road race where he sacrificed his chance in the Time Trial for his country. That’s unheard of in sports nowadays. He’s a Kiwi legend.”

Can Gordy retain the title, or is there someone else you would much rather spend a five hour ride with?

This is your chance to tell us who you love and why you love them. It doesn’t need to be because they are fastest, maybe they are the fiercest, the funniest or the friendliest.

So what’s the process?

First of all we need you to tell us who you think should be a finalist for this award. Nominations are now open. You need to get all nominations in by 11 November.

NOMINATE NOW!

The top five people with the most nominations will then be the finalists. Voting will then be open on the 14th November for you to show us who you love most.

Voting will close 16th December.

The People’s Choice Award will be awarded at the BikeNZ Road and Track Rider of the Year Awards, 6th January 2012 in Christchurch.
