Bike Manawatu – Invitation to Riders and Non Riders

For those who have experienced giving something back to an organisation or sport you are involved in, is hugely satisfying. For those who haven’t yet experienced this, we offer you an opportunity to find out more and how to go about giving back to your club as a board member.

For me, after following my cycling son and daughter around local and national events for five years and now coming up to my fifth year on the Bike Manawatu board, two years as Chairman, I feel satisfied I have given something back to cycling. However it is time for me to step down as Club Chairman and a board member at the AGM on the 28 April and let new people and fresh ideas take the club to the next level. I will still remain actively involved with our club doing other helpful things.

Bike Manawatu now extend an invitation to any rider or non rider who feels ready to give some of your time back to our club by expressing an interest and talk to us about being part of our board.

We have an outstanding team of people on the Bike Manawatu board- Mike Craine, Tim Lloyd, James Denholm, Andrew Ward, new board member Michelle Turner and myself. We also have an outstanding club secretary in Keryn Paekau. Together we meet once per month for our board meetings, and in-between talking we communicate by email on decisions in the best interest of the club.
To find out more about what a role on our board involves please call myself John van Lienen on 0274 464 683 or email me at john.vanlienen@bayleys.co.nz. I welcome your call before the 25th of April 2018.

Sad passing of Club member Glenn Thorby

The sad passing of one of the nicest guys you could possibly meet came as a huge shock to many people after his short illness. Members of the club and Glenn’s BBC team of club riders attended a very special funeral in Glenn’s home town of Foxton last weekend. A few drinks in the local RSA to celebrate Glenn friendship was enjoyed by his cycling buddies.

Nicky Webster- Hero who Completes Apiti Ride

6 IMG 5497
Many of our club members set off around the long gruelling hilly Apiti circuit last weekend to help achieve a goal that fellow cyclist Nicky Webster wanted to conquer. What many members would not have known is that Nicky has suffered ill health for a long time and discovered that cycling helped manage symptoms of her rare immune deficiency disease. Something humble Nicky would never have shared. She has been a valued member of the Velo Girls and to hear that paediatrician Nicky has cared for hundreds of Manawatu heart children and their families and has raised $19,000 for them in charity rides came as no surprise. We wish Nicky all the very best in her new Job in Tasmsnia Australia. She is a true “Hero”

Commonwealth Games best wishes

Bike Manawatu extend all the very best to Campbell Stewart and Michaela Drummond at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast Australia. Our two young rising stars of track will probably be the youngest riders at the games and this experience against some of the most experienced older riders in the world will be a challenge for them. Be sure to support them by watching their races on TV from between the 7th of April.
