Gearing Up

Hoping we will be done with this cold winter that has gripped us this year. We have avoided most to the big wet but the cold mornings have been a bit to conquer.

As a Club we have been pushing on with having racing through the winter on the back of a very successful 6 Hour at Manfeild.

There’s been a good variation with some new courses to spice things up a little. The first weekend of August was host to the 52nd running of the Novice Tour, most entries in many years and another very successful event.

Our Junior programme with mentors invited to ride with the Year 7 and 8 riders has been a huge success, some parents moving on to race in their own categories.

Kapiti Cycling club have once again run a great winter series which is frequented by our local riders. Round 3 last weekend saw Garry Buys race for the first time in many years. Supporting him in D grade were Wayne Fage and Rob Ryan.

Inspired by this there’s been a decision made to shift our Club Champs on August 31st to our Glen Oroua circuit. We have raced there earlier in the year and whilst predominately flat, it is still a worthy course.

We must cater for every skill and age for us to function as a club. There will be a WCNI race and the resurrection of the Joey Allan that will satisfy the vertical needs of the elite, in our view encouraging the grass roots with doable circuits is key.

All age grades will be recognised, and there will be 3 mass starts. Click HERE to register for Club Road Champs.

Kapiti riders travel up here on September 21st to join our Sunday morning Memorial park ride, reciprocal arrangements will follow we are sure.

With Road race champs done we will be looking at securing a venue for our Hill climb and maybe a new ITT course. We have made initial enquiries about a Criterium track close to the inner city. All these will happen before the end of the year.

It’s not unusual for locals to head overseas to compete. Glenn Kirk and Rob Duff are famous for it. Just today Cliff Hughes wrapped up a win in the 4 day Tour of Samoa.

Tough opposition and rumour is it’s ruffled a few feathers.

Take the opportunity to race, enjoy the challenge, spring is on the way!
