With the AGM done and dusted with the Annual Road and Track prizegiving taking place last Saturday 28th April at the Marist Clubrooms the Board of Bike Manawatu is totally focused on presenting a full year of Racing and Recreational riding in 2018.
Thanks to Kate Stewart who came along to assist Ian Gray with the track prizegiving and Campbell Stewart who was in attendance to award some trophies and have a talk about his year so far and his journey for the next few months. Campbell also popped down to Memorial Park on Tuesday evening to address the PNINS cycling group before their training ride. A truly awesome couple of young adults who we are incredibly proud of.
It’s been a busy year to date with Racing held at the Feilding track under the eyes of Ian Gray and his support group. Track records broken by numerous riders even though numbers were down on previous years. A robust calendar being worked on for this years road and track will ensure more riders are able to enjoy the benefits of both disciplines without burn out. The club ran a successful but wet Hill climb championship at Valley Road, the ITT Championship at Rongotea and combined WCNI / Road race championships at Halcombe in the early part of this year. Adding to this the continuation of the ITT series at Kairanga you’d have thought we have done well, but the New look Board of Bike Manawatu know we can do better.
Our New Chairperson Mike Craine has an eager board under him with the Assistance of a very worthy Deputy Chairperson Michelle Turner. Together with Megan Blatchford-Peck, Michelle brings a important gender balance back to the table and the whole board has an enormous faith and respect with Keryn Paekau our secretary James Denholm, Andrew Ward, Dan Mackay and Tim Lloyd complete the board but we have the assistance of many other enthusiastic Bike Manawatu members both Young and Old. All the shoes of the board have Cleats attached
The Boards aim is to reignite the racing programme. To work closely with WCNI to foster and grow centre racing and as mentioned to incorporate our Local track competition. We are kicking off our schools programme this week and there will be racing events open to BM members Sunday Morning in the not too distant future. Whilst we are absolutely focused on Racing we certainly aren’t forgetting the recreational rides, we are well aware that this is where many cyclists start. However we encourage some of the riders to challenge themselves and give racing a go. You are never too old, never out of your depth.
We are aware our Website needs an upgrade, we use Facebook but also understand this doesn’t suit everyone. The word passionate gets thrown around a lot, almost as much as “like” get added between words in sentences by our young riders, but if the cap fits we’ll were it. We all know what a great sport Cycling is, it’s addictive, it’s fun, it’s social and above all it’s great for your health both Mental and Physical. Mistakes have been made, people have been upset, we are looking forward because the only thing you get from looking back is a sore neck.
Keep those legs pedalling
Tim Lloyd on behalf of the Board of Bike Manawatu
