The Course

The start of the event is The Square, next to the i-Site building in the centre of Palmerston North City. The finish is at Memorial Park on the Napier road, east of the City Centre.

Timing

A timing chip is provided and needs to be fitted to the fork of your bicycle. The timing 'mats' at the start and finish lines record your start and finish time. Times will be published on this website in the Results page within 24 hours of your finish.

Entering the Gravel and Tar Classic

The cost to enter the Gravel and Tar Classic is $55 for each individual rider up until the 20th of January.

After January 20th, registration incurs a late entry fee of $10.

Online registration closes at 5 pm on Thursday the 26th January. You can register online buy clicking on the 'Enter Online' tab above. 

Team entry requires a minimum of four riders and costs an extra $100 above individual entry for five riders (total team entry cost $375). Team rosters can be changed up until the evening of the 16th of January by notifying the Race Director.

All members of the same team should ideally be wearing the same team kit. If this is a problem, please advise the Race Director.

Late entries for individuals and teams will also be accepted in person at Cyclista Cafe (54 George St) on Friday 27th between 9 am and 2 pm, or at AvantiPlus on Ferguson St, Palmerston North on Saturday 28th January between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm. A late entry fee of $10 per rider will apply. Contact the race director Steve Stannard if you have any questions 021809597.

You can also enter on the day at the i-Site in The Square between 6:30 am and 7:30 am. No entries at all will be taken after 7:30 am.

Registration

All entrants must register to get their timing chip, ride pack and ride number.
This can be done either:
1. On Saturday 28th January at AvantiPlus on Ferguson St in Palmerston North (link to their website here) between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm, or;
2. On the morning of the 29th January between 6:30 am and 8:00 am at the i-Site in The Square.

Parking

Please avoid the I-site car parking in the square if possible, as we have buses arriving and leaving throughout the day of the 29th January, there is plenty of parking around the square in front of the I-site and a small part of the I-Site car park now, there will be a sign in place showing Bus park only area.

Start/Finish

Start from: The Square, Palmerston North at 10 am.
Gather at i-Site at least 30 min before the start time
All Toilets at i-site will be open

Finish: Outside Memorial Park
Course Closes: 1:00pm
Timing mats will be in position until 1:00pm

Showers/Toilets

There are shower & toilets facilities in the public toilets, which are attached to i-Site building in The Square by the start line. There is an attendant there between 10am and 4pm on Sunday’s.

Presentations

Presentation will take place at Memorial Park one hour after the first 'Classic' rider finishes. You must be present and dressed in suitable attire to go onto the stage to claim your prize money. Team prize money receipt will require all members on the team to go onto the stage.

Race rules

1. Open to U19, Senior, and Masters riders only. U17 riders and Senior/Masters riders inexperienced in elite racing are encouraged to enter the Gran Fondo event.
2. Start/finish is at The Square in Palmerston North City, neutralized until the race reaches the intersection of James Line Rd or when the Chief Commissaire indicates.
3. Entrants must have a current (2016) Racing Licence (Race or Race Elite Cycling NZ Membership) 2016 (Red)– overseas riders must obtain an International Licence from their country’s cycling association. The licence will need to be sighted at registration.
4. Race managed & marshalled by Cycling NZ accredited officials and Cycling NZ racing rules apply.
5. Three neutral wheel support vehicles will be provided, but riders are encouraged to take a spare tube or tyre.
6. Outside support permitted at Pohangina Village, the intersection between Zig Zag Rd and Valley Rd, the intersection of Watershed Rd and Colyton Rd (sole feed zone), and Ashhurst town only.
7. There will be a photo finish with back-up hand timing.
8. Entries will be vetted by the Race Manager and a Bike NZ official
9. The field limited to the first 100 accepted entries, plus a possible further 15 entries (3 teams) at the Race Manager’s discretion.
10. Prize money awarded to first 20 individual placings.
11. Prize money will be awarded to the first six teams according to the sum of the finishing times of the first four riders in each team.
12. There will be three $500 primes on the circuit – details still to come.

Prize Giving

All prizes are spot prizes, including major prizes.
Prize giving will take place in Prize giving will take place at Memorial Park one hour after the first 'Classic' rider finishes their race. You must be present with your ride number to claim any prizes, including any cash prizes for first, second, and third fastest times (over 50 years of age). Those winning cash prizes will not also be eligible for spot prizes.
